The Internet: How Enjoyable Has It Been For You?

This morning, while having some dim sum alfresco-style, my husband and I spoke about our baby that is the Iriseum. We have been thinking about our vision for this business for over 2 years now, but have only been able to agree on a mission, which leverages both our interests and strengths to “shine a light on healthy brain function and blockchain literacy for all.”

Today, we tried getting to our vision through a different approach. I would ask him a question, and he would reply. Then I would offer a suggestion of a vision, and he would decide if it sits well with him. Repeat, till we come to a vision we both agree on.

Our conversation went something like this:

Me: How does brain and blockchain connect with one another?
Hub: No clue - your bright idea.
Me: Why do you love memes so much?
Hub: They are relatable and I find them funny.
Me: Are they important to you on the Internet?
Hub: I suppose so.
Me: Why are they important to you?
Hub: They make things more enjoyable.
Me: Has the Internet being enjoyable help to sustain you in life so far?
Hub: I suppose so.
Me: I know what is our vision for the Iriseum.
Hub: What?
Me: “Everyone enjoying the Internet.”
Hub: Yes…
Me: “A culture of enjoyment on the Internet, for all.”
Hub: Maybe.

For those who do not know my husband, his version of “yes” is very seldom “yes,” and more of “ok,” “maybe,” “quite.” So I know I have gotten somewhere when he said, “maybe.”

When I walk about with this new vision in mind, I feel a sense of lightness and clarity. I see a way ahead to build the Iriseum and offer products and services that combine healthy brain function + blockchain literacy, while working towards all kinds of people enjoying the Internet. I am inspired and motivated to begin my clarifying my own ideas about enjoyment. What does it mean to ENJOY?

Earlier this week, I tweeted a reflection about the purpose of leadership. I felt that leadership is about adding to people’s lives, but I wasn’t sure what it was that I’d hope to add to the people who would follow me. Is it Joy, Courage, Ability, or Relationship?

I am, most interested in Joy. And this morning I realised, so is my husband. The reason why I am in mental health, the reason why he is in technology, is because we enjoy these fields of study and application. But we differ because I insist that Enjoyment can make us money, while he believes Enjoyment cannot sustain us.

So this is where we are now.

The Internet has improved lives in many ways. Below are 14 ways identified by Community Tech Network, which aims to transform lives through digital equity. Blockchain is the newest innovation that enhances the way the Internet can build and offer products and services. How does blockchain improve our lives, and in the Iriseum’s case, how can we show others why blockchain increases our enjoyment on the Internet?

To enjoy has two meanings:\

  1. to take delight or pleasure in (an activity or occasion), or\
  2. to possess and benefit from.

Since our engagement with the blockchain world 3 years ago for me, and 10 years ago for him, we have learnt a lot. Did we always necessarily delight or pleasure in it? Not really, unless we profited financially, or gained community, or learnt something that stimulated our brain organs. Why are we still engaging with blockchain? Because now he works in a blockchain-related, and I have a community living on the blockchain, and we both own NFTs and enjoy the culture around memes and web3 community very much.

We stay because we continue to enjoy ourselves on the blockchain.

But we need to be watchful about enjoyment too, because many people throughout the ages have enjoyed something too much, it becomes an addiction and leads to their downfall. And so from a healthy brain function perspective, it is important to understand the difference between enjoyment and addiction. Enjoyment leads to pleasurable personal experiences that enhances, rather than neglects, relational health, which is closely linked to mental health.

Esther Perel recorded an incredible definition of mental health recently, which resonates and amplifies my own thoughts and feelings in the matter, having worked 8 years in mental health and living with a mental health condition for 12 years as of this year. Watch and listen to this exceptional teacher and counsellor here:

Quote: “Feeling personally and communally supported and connected is a key component to feeling good. Intimacy and human interaction have a direct correlation to our mental health and longevity. Relational health must be a focal point of our mental health approach going forward. After all, the quality of relationships determines the quality of our lives.”

The Iriseum focuses our products, services and IP development on the application of knowledge about healthy brain function and blockchain literacy.
