Life and work
Carlos Alberto Serra de Oliveira was born on August 10, 1921, in Belém do Pará (Brazil) and died in Lisbon on July 1, 1981. Son of Portuguese emigrants, he only spent the first two years of his life in Brazil. In 1923, the family returned to Portugal to settle in the small village of Febres (Gândara) and the father continued his medical practice there. Ten years later, after completing his primary education, Carlos de Oliveira moved to Coimbra to attend and complete his high school and university studies. He entered the Faculty of Arts in 1941, later graduating with a degree in Historical-Philosophical Sciences.
During the 15 years he remained in Coimbra, the poet and writer created and developed a solid friendship, intellectual coexistence and ideological solidarity with other young university students, namely Joaquim Namorado, Fernando Namora and João Cochofel. As a student, he joined a group of intellectuals demanding a new ethical and aesthetic concept, that is, a new humanism. It was also around this time that he began to collaborate in the editorial offices of the magazines Vértice and Seara Nova.
