The Social Dilemma

Within the Blockchain itself, we have the Blockchain Trilemma which is saying a typical Blockchain would usually only have two out of three of these properties.

However, within the Decentralized Social Space, we have a somewhat similar, but different problem.

We take the “Social Dilemma” as talked about by HashBrown Research.

Firstly, taking Lens Protocol as an example. Being on the Polygon blockchain, we frequently see data being indexed really slowly, and this is only with the whitelisted people who are on-board. Currently it is quite inefficient, and it is facing problems when scaling, which they offered a new solution recently known as Momoka, which attempts to address this issue.

Secondly, taking Farcaster as an example, there are few Farcaster Hubs, which is a node that stores the data in the network. The problem is that there are only a few Farcaster Hubs, due to the average joe not having the technical capabilities, or the incentives to run the hub.

Thirdly, taking Nostr as an example, although generating a private key is really easy on Nostr, and there currently seems to be sufficient relays (for now) to support an open network with no whitelist, and the speed is acceptable, the data is not portable, which brings us to the next point.

Lens Protocol, Farcaster and Nostr have different data structures and therefore your Social Graph is not shared among these Protocols. Furthermore, it might be difficult for a regular user who wants access to these Protocols but do not meet the whitelist requirements and limits their accessibility to these platforms.

Therefore, an infrastructure layer would be needed to address these issues that we are facing in the Decentralized Social Space.
