The Cintrão lighthouse came into operation on May 28, 1957. It is located roughly in the middle of the northern slope of the island of S. Miguel. It has a tower 14 meters high and 118 meters high. It was equipped with a 3rd order fixed drum dioptric lenticular apparatus, large model (500 mm focal length), having as light source the incandescence of acetylene gas with eclipsed light. It had an oil lamp as a backup light.
In 1977, gas automation was started.
It was equipped with photovoltaic panels in 1987, running on solar energy. The source of energy for the residence and other dependencies of the lighthouse was provided by a generator set, used only at night and for a few hours during the day.
In the year 2000 it was connected to the public distribution grid and was automated with the APCL-10 system.
The water that supplies this lighthouse continues to come from a cistern.
