Raspberry pie raspberry PI 4 prices soared, the official complained: production capacity can't keep up
March 9th, 2022

Raspberry PI has sold more than 45 million units worldwide. As a popular microcomputer, raspberry PI 4 has also suffered a shortage crisis recently, and the price has soared.

According to Tom’s hardware, most major retailers in the United States and Britain do not have raspberry PI 4 inventory. Third party Amazon sellers and eBay scalpers list these boards at four times the original price.

In the recent episode of the PI cast, Eben Upton, co-founder of raspberry PI, revealed that the market demand far exceeded their production capacity.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of raspberry Pi’s birth, Tom’s hardware hosted the PI cast special, hosted by Raben Upton and Pete Lomas, CO founders of raspberry PI.

When an audience asked, “when will the supply of raspberry PI 4 return to normal?” Upton initially jokingly said “no longer answer this question”, but then he confirmed that they produced about 500000 raspberry PI per month, but “the current order backlog is about 1 million to 2 million”, and “huge orders will eat up all production capacity”.

It home learned that Upton also said that some backlog orders are caused by dealers, some are sold directly after getting the products, and some are open to advance purchase. The inability of production capacity to meet the surge in demand is a widespread problem.

At the end of 2021, raspberry PI officials had to raise the price of 2GB model by $10 and withdraw the raspberry PI 4 of 1GB model from the market (reaching a high price of $35).
