Spider Tanks: Where MOBA and FPS meet from GALA Games

Gala Games is now a staple in the play-to-earn gaming space, and they have partnered with GAMEDIA to create a unique PVP game of tanks with different weapons of destruction and legs equipped. Yes, that’s right, the tanks have legs! If this chaotic idea seems right up your alley, then Spider Tanks may be a game you should check out. Let’s take a look at what this game of war machines is all about!

Background

Spider Tanks is a PVP arena brawler spawned from the collaboration of Gala Games and GAMEDIA with the goal of making the world’s first play-to-earn Esport. Built on the Ethereum blockchain, the game offers competitive and fast-paced gameplay while providing earning opportunities through cryptocurrency and NFT integration. The body parts and weapons of the tanks in this game are all NFTs. They can be collected and traded, allowing you to tailor your armored combat vehicle to fit your playstyle as you climb your way to the top and become a pro!

Gameplay and Graphics

Like most competitive games, Spider Tanks has gameplay that’s easy to pick up but hard to master. Especially since the game is a mixture of MOBA where there’s a lot of action happening all over the well-designed and varied maps while you have to micro-manage your own tank and aim for enemies as you navigate to advantageous spots in the map. In a way, the gameplay reminded me a bit of the mobile game Brawl Stars as well as SMITE although the graphics are quite unique for Spider Tanks. It’s a mixture of realistic and fantasy animation equipped with a well-thought sound design that makes for a great gaming experience.

There are three game modes in this free-to-play game. Including:

Team Deathmatch -  A PVP game mode where 2 teams of 3 players duke it out and compete for the most kills until the timer is up.

Capture the Flag - A game about controlling an objective. Players must find specific parts of the map where they need to stand over it to gain points. The team with the most points will be hailed the winner.

Capture the Chicken - A spin on capture the flag but this time the players will wander around the map looking for as many chickens as possible and return them to their bases. The team with the most recovered hens will be the victors in this game mode.

Although there are multiple game modes, they all tend to bring you straight into the action and this affects the dynamics of the gameplay in my opinion. This might make the game feel monotonous if you play it for an hour or two since the only way to make the game feel different is by equipping new weapons and bodies for your tank.

Earning Potential

SILK is the token used in Spider Tanks to power their player-driven economy. It’s an ERC-20 token that can be earned through playing and winning battles. It can be used to upgrade the tanks and weapons in the game. It can also be traded or staked. Tanks are divided into the ‘Body’ and weapon that is attached. They are both Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT) which means they are unique and can be owned by players. They vary in rarities and the higher the rarity, the more a player can get by trading or selling it on the GALA games marketplace. Spider Tanks is also Free-to-play but players will have a reduced income in comparison to those who actually bought NFTs. At least it offers an option for people to still play the game without spending and also get to earn a little.

Final Thoughts

Seeing the quality of graphics and gameplay alone was enough to get me hooked on Spider Tanks. Although the first few games are enjoyable, because there are not many avenues for skill expression in the game I quickly found it dull. Being placed straight into battle after queuing made it a bit jarring for my taste. I wish there were some other objectives you can take down to give your tanks slight boosts or abilities during a fight.

If you also want to play Spider Tanks seriously, I suggest having good and varied weapons as changes to these can alter your gameplay entirely. Overall, Spider Tanks was an enjoyable game for me and if it’s updated to make the gameplay more dynamic, I can see myself playing it even without the Play-to-earn as it possesses enough qualities to rival most games that have been released in recent years. If you want a fast-paced, competitive game then I can safely recommend Spider Tanks as it is one of the more fun NFT games I’ve experienced.
