Zeus Meets Odin in Prometheus: A new P2E SRPG from Metagame Arena Studios

Mythology meets strategy games in this new Strategic RPG game from Metagame Arena Studios. Mixing Eastern and Western mythology in a war chess-inspired card game, Let’s take a look at this new Play-to-earn game in the Binance blockchain.

Graphics/Artstyle

Bright colors and Animated style portraits are used for the cards and posters for Prometheus. This made the Gods and heroes we know from different mythologies look like they came straight out of an anime but still possess their distinct features. Zeus may not look like the grumpy old man we usually associate him with but he’s still portrayed like he can throw lightning bolts at you if you ever mess with him**.**

People who often play Chinese RPGs may find the art style familiar as the cards look like they came from Eastern paintings. However, the characters themselves in the game look nostalgic, as if they fit in an old Nintendo 3DS game.

Gameplay

Prometheus is a 5v5 NFT battle that takes place on a chess-board-like battlefield where each player controls their cards based on their abilities and attacks. There are two game modes: PVE & PVP. In Person versus Environment, you get to fight NPCs. This is also a beginner-friendly mode since you can familiarize yourself with the game in a stress-free environment to learn at your own pace. You can also play Narrative Battles to progress the story of the game.

PVP is the more hardcore mode where you get to battle other players and their battle cards. Equipping cards with high stats and a more planned-out team will be beneficial if you want to see the victory screen. There are two phases you’ll experience when you play the game. A pre-war and an in-game phase. Pre-war is where you choose the right cards to field in a match as there are 15 classes of cards which all work differently. While the in-game phase will consist of real-time decisions you will have to make and adapt to as you undergo the battle on the board.

The gameplay reminded me a bit of early Fire Emblem with the anime-inspired characters and small in-game models on a board-like field that features a short animation shot before they unleash their attacks. This creates a dynamic feel while playing and provides players with a second to breathe before thinking of their next moves.**

Cards can be upgraded by merging two copies of the same card. This levels up the character and increases its generation. Only generation 2 characters can be used to play the game so making smart decisions while buying battle card characters in the marketplace is the start of your strategizing phase.

Tokenomics/Earning Potential

Prometheus uses a two-token system that is common to most blockchain games. WP is the coin used for utility in the game and is the overall driver of the Play-to-Earn system the game implements. It’ll be used for trading cards while the MGA token which stands for the developer studio's name MetaGame Arena, is the governance token. This can be used for crafting new cards and upgrading current cards of the same character. There is a total supply of 30 million MGA and the developers are planning to release more games in the future so there may be some incentive for holding the coin in the long run.

Since the game is based on NFTs, most of the assets in the game can be traded to also make earnings out of them. Especially if you are able to get hold of the rarer cards which are low in volume so yield will surely be higher as the interest in the game increases.

Final Thoughts

I believe Prometheus offers a lot to people who are interested. It has well-designed characters and the influences of the mythology in the cards are well adapted to the aesthetic the designers chose so you know who you have at a glance, but it also looks different enough to hold its own value.

Although I have my doubts about the earning potential the game holds since only about 30% of the supply of the MGA token is available for the community to profit from. This may also inflate the value of the coin later and the barrier to entry for the game will become unbearably high. It’s also not available for Free-to-Play players so investors who would like to participate in the game will earn more if they are early adopters.

Overall, I believe the game’s general concept could work in the short term and they should keep on updating the game to keep it fresh while it’s still gaining traction. Although I personally don’t see myself playing the game since it doesn’t offer anything new to the SRPG genre aside from its NFT integration, I believe the idea could be developed more since mythologies have been the basis of other popular games like God of War. So, if done right, it could be massive. It’s cool to see Zeus meet Odin in a game but I think Prometheus could’ve done it better.
