Battlefly - A Butterfly Fighting Game

**Have you ever thought of butterflies as something that can be deadly? Probably not because most butterflies we see are colorful and delicate-flying creatures often resting in flower gardens but the team behind Battlefly is doing something different to this concept, turning relatively harmless butterflies into civilization-wiping assassins.

**

**Battlefly is a strategy auto-battle game that lets players build butterflies equipped with different weapons and abilities called “Battlefly” pitting them one-on-one to see who will become the superior Battlefly. Set in a hostile apocalyptic environment where the earth is overrun by Artificial Intelligence that gained enough power to take over the world using this genetically and mechanically modified kaleidoscope of flutterers.

Battlefly is in the Treasure ecosystem and uses the $MAGIC coin where the floor price of one Battlefly is 100 $MAGIC as of the time of writing this review, purchasable in the Treasure marketplace which houses other projects like Smol brains, Toadstoolz, Realm, and much more. The game is built on Arbitrum, a layer 2 solution for Ethereum used to lower gas fees. The game will also be using $BFLy as a token in the game.

To be able to play the game you need to purchase at least one BattleFly although it started as a free mint when it first came out. BattleFlys are NFTs that start as cocoons and incubate in a place called The Silo where they will have two weeks to undergo their metamorphosis and become fighting Battleflys. You will be able to purchase Battleflys in the Treasure Marketplace. In the first season, players can stake their Battleflys in 2 places: The Garden and The Hyperdome.

The Garden

In the garden, the Battleflys will salvage mods (attachments to the butterflies) on a random server where 100 butterflies are placed and meet on a single landing platform to claim the salvaged mods. Two types of mods can be found, Weapons and Systems.  Weapons are attachments that affect the combat ability of your Battlefly while Systems are primarily used for raising the defense and utility of the Battleflys which affects its overall build.

There are also different rarities for these mods and an RNG component in how rare they can be but they do scale off of the rarity of the Battlefly that will scavenge for them. Mods found on this game mode can either be swapped for the currently equipped mod on their Battlefly upon leaving the cocoon phase or scrapped for some Nectar that they can use to make their Battleflys stronger or do actions faster.

The Hyperdome

After scavenging mods in the garden, the fully equipped Battlefly can now be sent to the Hyperdome where they will spend their time looking for opponents to battle 1-on-1. Players will have to stake $MAGIC to participate in these battles and the winning Battlefly will earn 1% of the $MAGIC staked by its opponent. Smart equipment of mods and understanding of the game will increase the chances of winning for your butterflies and players will have to strategize accordingly since changes can’t be done once the BattleFly is deployed in the Hyperdome. There is a reload and recharge time before a Battlefly can enter battle again. In the whitepaper, it states up to 10 times per day but mileage may vary because it is RNG and may vary from day to day.

Although on paper the game looks solid, I still have my doubts and reservations about it. One example is the team. Searching for the game’s team has been easy but their information is limited to their Discord and Twitter handles with no real way to authenticate them making it pretty sketchy and hard to navigate for people new to the crypto space who would like to try the game.

Another is the graphics. Although the art linked to the game and its story is very fascinating, I think they could’ve designed the Battleflys better to make it seem like it survived a lot of the things they mentioned in their post-apocalyptic history and the war they have to face with the different factions included in the game. More could’ve been done to appeal to a larger audience with their aesthetic choices.

Overall, I think the game needs more work done to be considered worth playing, especially when you have to shell out money for it. I’m not really a fan of the RNG component with regards to earning since it removes being rewarded for skill and makes getting your capital back uncertain as well. Not to mention that the team’s previous experience not being clear makes me cautious in letting them handle my hard-earned cash.

Maybe if the graphics and gameplay were a bit more engaging and interactive, then I would have easily recommended the game. It already has a solid storyline which I dig a lot and you’ll be able to take part in it once the ability to select an ally faction is implemented in the upcoming event to be released later this year, adding more depth to the game. Currently, the negatives of the game outweigh the positives in my opinion but if you are interested in a game where you just stake and chill while watching it fight for you then float like a Butterfly and sting like one too in Battlefly.
