With the rise in prominence of anime-inspired games like Genshin Impact, the Persona series, and other Anime related titles. Here comes another game that’s cut in the same cloth, offering waifus, cool weapons, and action-packed battles. Wonder Hero is a turn-based Strategy Role-playing game (RPG) that may be your newest game addiction!
Background
Built as a mobile game, Wonder Hero is a tactical turn-based game available on iOS and Android launched on January 26, 2022. You can play it on PC if you have an emulator installed. It’s a play-to-earn game meaning you are directly rewarded with tokens that have real-life value as you play and progress in the game. It also uses NFTs as assets meaning you have full ownership of your in-game items. The game is built in Polygon but is also connected to the Binance Smart Chain while using USDT as its currency on its marketplace.
The team behind Wonder Hero is documented and headed by Ethan Ng and L with multiple partners which include Polygon, Polkastarter, Morningstar Ventures, Merit Circle, and more.
Graphics
I was attracted by the animations Wonder Hero featured on their distribution materials. The trailer for the game also showcased their anime-inspired characters that all look pretty although the voice acting and animation ruined it for me as they made the game appear cheap because of the poor editing and some distortion on the voices for the characters.
Animations from the trailer don’t look the same as in game though as it featured the same well-designed characters but this time in a more cartoony chibi style. Although the voice acting for the characters are done well, the quality of the recording is still noticeable if you focus on them over the hectic gameplay.
Gameplay
To play you must have at least 3 Hero Skins and 3 Weapons, so my Free-to-play friends can give this one a pass although there is a scholarship route available as it also has guild functionality. It features turn-based chess-like gameplay similar to Final Fantasy tactics combined with Fate Grand Order. Each hero has different classes and abilities you must keep in mind while deploying strategies to maximize your chances of completing each stage with the most stars possible. I recommend creating a balanced team of damage dealers like the range heroes and more supportive characters if you want to have a comfortable experience playing as the game becomes harder the further you progress.
Surprisingly there’s an auto-battle and a fast-forward feature in Wonder Hero but I recommend using it sparingly as the AI is not always the most efficient and will oftentimes put your characters in less desirable spots on the board. There will also be a PVP mode but we must wait for more information about it so currently, all we have is a PvE story mode. If you have a well-built team and always keep in mind your heroes’ skills and abilities when making decisions, then I think you will be enjoying Wonder Heroes while breezing through its multiple levels.
Earning Potential
There are multiple ways to earn in Wonder Hero and the first method is by simply playing. Wonder Hero uses WND and HON tokens as its main currencies. WND acts as the governance token and is utilized to acquire heroes, weapons, and hero upgrades. While HON is the utility and reward token mostly used for hero and weapon upgrades.
Every hero skin and weapon is an NFT, players can also trade these as they hold their own value especially when they are rarer.
Final Thoughts
Wonder Hero is fun although the main menu and most of the elements in the game look eerily similar to Honkai Impact in my opinion. I wish it was free-to-play as I believe a lot of people would enjoy its gameplay. I hope the developers work on the scaling of the enemies though as I think the game will be significantly harder for people who only use characters and weapons below the three-star rating.
Overall, I think Wonder Hero made an enjoyable game of waifus, weapons, and strategy that is far from perfect but still a welcome addition to the lineup of fun games in the crypto gaming space.
