SIDUS Heroes: A Futuristic Turn-based RPG Governed by Gamers

Set in a timeline where living things and technology are so closely linked together that they almost act as one entity, SIDUS Heroes is a new Turn-based RPG with Triple-A game title qualities. It promises to create rich, fun gameplay where players have a say on how they want the game to be as they participate in the game’s politics while exploring the galaxies and battling other players. There are a lot of promises this game holds, but can they live up to the hype?

Background

SIDUS Heroes has a huge team working behind it and they all pack a solid résumé. Having worked for design, graphics, games, and even NFTs so there are high expectations from this team and based on the game trailer it seems like they are planning to deliver on all fronts. Set on different planets with multiple races named after some of the most popular cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, Avalanche, Bitcoin, and the like. SIDUS is also going to be fun for people who are already immersed in cryptocurrency. Did I mention that they are planning to put all of this on the web and make it playable right from your browser?

Gameplay

To be able to play the game, players must first own one of the SIDUS Heroes NFT art that is available on the game’s site and OpenSea. They look similar in style to characters from DC Comics’ Green Lantern from my perspective with motifs inspired by other science-fiction novels. They will be then integrated as playable characters in SIDUS Heroes with the rarity of the NFT determining the stats of your character inside the game.

There are multiple game modes available aside from the interstellar exploration you can do in the open world. Like the Battle Arena, a PVP game mode where you can battle other players in 1-on-1 or 3 vs 3 matches with one pet each. Pets are companions in fights that can improve your survival in battles. They can be adopted (in this game meaning purchased) or earned by completing specific missions.

Players can also build Infrastructure, craft weapons and items for other players or sell them on the game’s marketplace as they promote a system where players can choose the profession they have in the game like Traders, Farmers, Scientists, or even Politicians since lands are also NFTs in this game.

Players who hold the governance token can also participate in the actual governance of the game as there will be council meetings and the holders have the power to voice their opinions in front of other players to promote the survival and flourishing of their races. It brings another level to the game if you are willing to get full-on immersed in the sci-fi-inspired world the developers built.

Tokenomics

Sidus will be using a dual-token system in the form of SIDUS and SENATE with Senate being the governance token used for voting and character upgrades and Sidus being the main utility and reward token in the game. As the game is in the Ethereum Network, both coins are ERC-721 tokens. Although being in the Ethereum Network has its benefits, I think with a game of this scale where transactions are bound to happen a lot, the gas fees are not too kind in the Ethereum network and may be a considerable factor when trying to make the most out of the Play-to-earn mechanic.

Final Thoughts

I believe SIDUS Heroes has an identity crisis. It wants to be an MMORPG that has turn-based combat and also lets players explore vast spaces with different planets as an entire open-world metaverse. That’s a lot of gameplays mashed into one game that gives me glimpses of Star Wars minus the hacking and slashing of lightsabers.

If the developers can somehow pull this off, I think it will be one of the games that can be shaping the future of how games are developed, especially since they are building on new technology like WebGL which can let you play games of this magnitude using just your browser. Although I still think that it will fall short of its expectations as its roadmap is quite the timebomb they have placed in itself. They are trying to pull off everything in the span of 4 years and with this much content, some aspects of the game are bound to be overlooked. I would like to be proven wrong though as SIDUS Heroes is a game that holds a lot of promise. A futuristic game with its future depending on the gamers that govern it.
