Nyan Heroes: Saving cats one mecha at a time

Take Cats, guns, mechas, and giants mashed into one action-packed battle royale game and you have the essence of Nyan Heroes. A third-person shooter that rewards players who participate with tokens while also helping shelter cats with each purchase of their cute cat NFTs. Let’s take a look at what this feline-inspired game has in store for us.

Graphics/ Artstyle

Nyan Heroes features animated graphics but leans toward a more realistic look in terms of the Nyans (the cats) who all look adorable. They can be found in different colors and designs as they are NFTs including their Guardian which is a mecha suit that the cats pilot in order to combat the Elementals, who are the enemies in the game.

Designs for the Guardians lean towards the more robotic/astronaut suit-looking side of things. Nyan Heroes is made in Unity, featuring smooth animations and realistic effects. The explosions look real enough and not exaggerated. The seemingly cyberpunk-inspired world your Nyan and Guardian traverse looks immersive and realistic with buildings and storefronts all cat-sized to accommodate our cute kitty friends. You can see that the developers have spent a lot of time on this project, not just plugging in any assets they can find and calling it a day. However, the game is also still far from perfect. **

Using the gameplay they feature on their YouTube channel as the basis, the boxes you can get your weapons from aren’t highlighted enough to see that you can interact with them unless you look closely. Also, probably the biggest problem is that there are no tracers for the bullets, making it look like you just aim at a target, and they just simply get hit and glow. For a shooter game, it’s huge to have polished shooting mechanics and I hope it gets fixed before its public release.

Gameplay

Cats in Mech Suits sound as chaotic as it is fun. With multiple game modes to choose from which include:

  • Battle Royale - Queue up solo or as a team of three and collect crystals to upgrade your abilities to be the last man standing in a typical battle royale match to earn rewards.

  • Open World MMO - A PVE game mode that will be friendly for beginners. This is where you explore the world and battle enemies at increasing levels.

  • Virtual World - An open-world mode where you can hang out with your friends or become a virtual merchant and sell your goods to other players inside a metaverse for Nyans and Guardians.

There are different types of Guardians like: Brawlers, Assassins, Snipers, Medics, Scout, Warrior, Defender, and Soldier each with varying styles of play.

Whether you want to shoot from afar until your opponent drops or you want to get up-close and personal with swift movement and abilities to even a more supportive role of helping your team, there is a guardian to accommodate your playstyle in Nyan Heroes. Although Free-to-play players will be locked with the Soldier class, these guardians have balanced stats so they can do a little bit of everything albeit much weaker but fret not as they can still stand toe-to-toe with other Guardians if they are played properly.

Tokenomics/Earning Potential

Nyan Heroes uses a dual token system for the game, $NYN and $CTNP. $NYN is the governance token with a fixed supply. It’ll be distributed within 4 years to ensure that people who staked for the game are compensated. $NYN will also provide support for the stability of the in-game coin: $CTNP which will be used for transactions inside the game like upgrading weapons for your Guardians.

There are Genesis Guardians that will be released, and they offer more earning power than the standard guardians that free-to-play players use. This rewards a player who chose to spend on the game while still keeping the game fair and not making it pay-to-win. You’ll also be able to breed Nyans and clone Guardians to possibly sell those assets on the game’s marketplace.

Final Thoughts

Since blockchain gaming is still in its early stages, it’s hard to determine for certain if this project will be successful but if you believe in the values of the developers and you find yourself liking cats in mech suits, then Nyan Heroes may be for you. Not to mention, the developers are planning to make the game Free-to-play, so I suggest waiting for the official public release of the game which is scheduled for Q4 of 2022.

Overall, with the goal of not just making a good game but also helping shelter cats that are in need of care, I find it hard not to like Nyan Heroes. Whether you’re in the game for the cause or just want to play a solid game of furballs in robots, I think Nyan Heroes is worth checking out.
