It’s not all Axes!: A short review of Axes Metaverse

In most battle royale games, your chosen weapon will predict how you fight to survive. You have snipers to fight at a distance and shotguns to finish off enemies in close quarters. But what if all you had were axes? This is what the developers behind Axes Metaverse thought of. With success Axes.io had as a mobile game, can the Axes Metaverse thrive in the growing play-to-earn market?

Background

Adapted from the popular Axes.io game, Axes metaverse is a project by Azur Games to move their way into the blockchain gaming space. As one of the top mobile gaming publishers, they have a lot of experience in making games and partnered with some well-known names in the crypto world like Binance, Merit Circle, and Infinity Ventures to help take the beloved hack-and-slash 2019 battle royale on mobile to bigger screens with earning mechanics included.

Graphics

Axes Metaverse shied away from the blocky, Minecraft style its predecessor had and seemed like it underwent a glow-up. It’s now more polished, vibrant, and just a little jaggedy than before. Now featuring a wide variety of characters that all looked well-designed to fit the aesthetics the developers are going for.

Gameplay

Although there are more game modes in store as they showed in their roadmap, the first game mode you are able to play is a battle royale where you fight against 14 others while collecting glowing orbs for experience points to obtain upgrades for either your character or your equipped weapon. These skills like increasing attack range, shooting extra projectiles or even having a shield to block damage will help increase your chances of survival while whacking and throwing axes at each other inside a closing circle until one remains. Axes Metaverse is fast-paced, and you can find yourself hopping into the next match before you can even think about it.

With the game being called Axes Metaverse, you’d think the primary weapon would only be axes right? There are specific classes that use axes like the Barbarian class but choosing other characters from different classes opens up more weapon choices for you to mix up the rather repetitive gameplay. These classes range from: Knight, Mage, Ranger, and Rouge. Which all have different abilities to take into account and help you get more first-place finishes. There’s a certain degree of mastery in the game to play it at a higher level as you have to aim while moving to hit your enemies. This increases your chances of not getting hit while also not dropping the damage you can dish out to your enemies.

There are two other known game modes: Axes: Team Tactics and Axes: Kingdom Wars but there is still no available gameplay for these two yet.

Tokenomics/Earning Potential

There’s some earning potential in this game as every character obtainable is an NFT that can be traded or sold on the game’s marketplace. Axes Metaverse also uses two tokens to power up its play-to-earn mechanics in the form of Axes Metaverse Shard (AMS) and Axes Metaverse Ingot (AMI). Both are BEP-20 tokens where the former is used as a resource token while the latter is used for governance. Both can be earned by playing and placing them on the leaderboard.

Final Thoughts

With a tried and tested game as its backbone, Axes Metaverse is sure to be a fun game for those who liked Axes.io. It’s not the flashiest of games or one with a ton of skill, but I still think it is a fun and enjoyable game if you are looking to burn a few minutes. It can also use some regular updates to help keep the game from getting stale too quickly. Maybe changes like interacting with the surroundings can help, like letting a player chop through trees to break an enemy's cover cause I think that’s what an axe should do.

In conclusion, if you are looking for an enjoyable game you can play but won’t take up too much of your time and still supply some of that play-to-earn cash, then Axes Metaverse may help cleave your boredom.
