Pilot a Mecha in the new NFT game Phantom Galaxies!

Fans of the mecha genre in gaming continue to win as new titles flock to the Web3 gaming world. One of the newest additions to the growing genre is Phantom Galaxies. Phantom Galaxies is an open-world online space simulator game where players explore space and gather resources while piloting a Starfighter, the game’s version of a Gundam.

Graphics/Artstyle

When I first saw the game’s designs on their website, I doubted that it would actually look that good since most of the graphics I see on play-to-earn games look good on their advertising material but just misses the mark when it comes to the game itself. I was actually delighted to see that Phantom Galaxies is different and the gameplay for their alpha testing, although not perfect (yet), looks good and stunning already.

Imagine a cross between Daemon X Machina and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron and you’ll have an idea of how the game looks. The places you can go to in the game space like the speed portals and inside the cabins of the spaceship your avatar can traverse are designed well. My only gripe with the visuals might be that during scenes where you use your avatar to talk to NPCs on ships, the character models’ mouths and expressions sometimes do not match with what they are saying in the audio and it looks so out of place for a game that has good gameplay making the game appear sloppily made if your first impressions are solely off of these scenes.

Gameplay

Honestly speaking, the gameplay might be the biggest selling point for the game. In my opinion, anybody who likes a good mecha game may find Phantom Galaxies enjoyable. It offers you different playstyles based on the 4 starter frames you can choose from which include: Lancer, Buster, Breacher, and Assault.

The game is a fast-paced 3rd-person shooter RPG, where you explore space for resources while fighting monsters that want to take over the world. You can fight as a mecha filled with different weapons and armor to take more hits and also transform into a spaceship to traverse the galaxy faster and offer more speed to dodge enemy attacks.

There are also other player activities offered by the game to keep you glued to your gaming device. There are Missions, Quests, Operations, and Raids. The developers are still working on the multiplayer mode which offers more layers to this game especially since players can purchase planets that gaming guilds can take advantage of. There are resources scattered in space; the farther you go, the larger the risks and the rewards, so guilds will have to strategize on how they colonize the space.

Tokenomics

Unlike most P2E games, Phantom Galaxies only use one coin for utility and governance, $Astrafer. However, the game developers, Blowfish Studios, made multiple ways for players to earn in the game aside from following the in-game story.

One of the primary ways to earn from the game is by buying and selling NFTs. Phantom Galaxies has 3 NFTs which are: The Starfighter Mechas themselves,  the Avatars who pilot the mechas, and Planet NFTs which are the equivalent of land ownership in the game.

Players who own the Planet NFTs will be able to passively earn $Astrafer, and store more Starfighters who they can then rent out to other players who want to try the game but are not ready to fully commit resources to the game.

Final Thoughts

To sum it up, my overall impression of the game is great and I can see it growing big if the developers can manage the game properly and keep the game looking fresh and non-repetitive. The multiplayer mode may provide an added layer of gameplay for players and guilds who want to team up and conquer the galaxies. Although I’m not a fan of the genre, considering all the factors above I think Phantom Galaxies should be kept on our radars as we traverse the galaxies of new crypto games today.
