Outland Odyssey: If Monster Hunter was a Play-to-Earn game

Have you ever wanted to go on an adventure in a fantasy land where you can hunt or tame monsters and craft items with their remains like our ancestors did in the past? This is the situation you’ll experience when you dive into Outland Odyssey; a play-to-earn action-adventure RPG game!

Background

Developed by Project SEED, Outland Odyssey is their first game in the Web3 space. Built on the Solana blockchain, Outland Odyssey allows players to explore and survive in a continent called Avoria that is filled with monsters called Zeds. You can tame and train these Zeds or slay them to create new items out of their material drops in this familiar take on the ARPG genre as you embark on your action-filled journey in this dying world.

Graphics and Gameplay

Graphics for Outland Odyssey may not wow many, but it does provide a good experience for an RPG game. The monsters are distinct but not too detailed while the heroes and their animations look fine but not smooth. This is about what I expected from an ARPG built for mobile gaming. Project SEED mentioned that they took inspiration from games like Monster Hunter, Diablo, and Pokémon for the game and it can be seen from how they created the world and its design for both the characters and heroes inside the game.

You could also see some semblance of the gameplay from the aforementioned games although they still tried to keep the game original by mixing and matching what benefits the story of the game. You can tame the Zeds so they can accompany you in battles while also battling monsters of their own kind.

A unique part of the game is how you can craft items and weapons from the monster you defeat. Each Zed has different characteristics and traits that translate to a weapon you craft out of their material drops when you defeat them. It may be heavier defense, swift movement, affinity to fire, and more. It can be played mostly as a single-player story mode, but you can also team up with your friends in a 4-man co-op to defeat mythical Zed’s which are this game’s equivalent of a raid boss for extra rewards and the friendship made along the way.

Selecting the proper gear will help the character explore the land of Avoria with ease which is helpful as it gets somewhat repetitive like most games in the genre. Expect a lot of grinding from this game where you do stuff a couple of times to complete quests although there is a story that unfolds as you go through each mission to help alleviate fatigue. There are also different hero classes like warrior, hunter, and technomancer which you select at the start of the game that somewhat determines your playstyle so choose one carefully!

Earning Potential

Outland Odyssey developers wanted to put the game on mobile so it’d be available to more people with its earning opportunities powered by their two tokens. $SHILL and $O2. $SHILL is Project SEEDs token that can be used across the games that they will release in the future as well. It can be obtained through random airdrops, completing P2P quests, and as rewards for some of the missions in the game while $O2 on the other hand is a coin convertible to fiat that you can get as rewards for completing missions and quests. It can be used to craft and upgrade items like weapons and armor as well as leveling up your Zed companions.

Final Thoughts

Outland Odyssey may not be ground-breaking but it offers a unique experience with its story and crafting mechanics that encourage players to look for the Zeds. Although I also believe that games like this tend to die out easily since the game loop offers nothing new, I hope the developers will keep adding new monsters and improve the animation and design of the game to help attract new players and grow out the player base as well as give long-time players a reason to stay with the game.

Overall, I think Outland Odyssey is a game worth checking out if you are looking for a new mobile game to play although I would recommend trying the game out first before you start opening your wallet. The game is free-to-play for those who just want to check out what Outland Odyssey is all about and familiarize themselves with the Zeds as they explore this new world of possibilities.
