Life and work

José Gomes Ferreira was born in Porto on July 9, 1900 and died in Lisbon on February 8, 1985.

In Lisbon, where he started living with his family at the age of four, he studied at the Camões and Gil Vicente high schools. At Gil Vicente he started with nostalgic poets, even collaborating with Fernando Pessoa on a sonnet for the magazine Ressurreição. His taste and talent for music, almost as strong and revealing as his talent and taste for poetry, led him around this time to compose a symphonic work – Idículo Rústico –, which would be premiered and performed by the orchestra David de Sousa, at Teatro Politeama. At the age of 24, José Gomes Ferreira completed his law degree and at the age of 25 he went to Norway to serve as consul in Kristiansund. However, in 1930 he returned to Portugal, abandoning his diplomatic career to dedicate himself full time to journalism. He then collaborated in Presença, Seara Nova, Descobrimento, Imagem (film magazine), Kino, Sr. Doutor (the children's magazine in whose pages he began to periodically publish As Aventuras de João Sem Medo, and Gazeta Musical e de Todas as Artes. He dedicated He began translating films, under the pseudonym of Álvaro Gomes.
