It is quite common to experience imposter syndrome while learning to play an instrument such as the piano or guitar. This feeling of “being left-out” or “inability to express” plays a monstrous role in one’s ability to display what they have learned. But it is “OK” to feel like this.
In fact, musicians from all over the globe face this challenge as well. Almost all artists have witnessed the imposter syndrome creeping into their lives. But the thin line that separates one from being successful is the ability to acknowledge the syndrome and shatter it through expressing their art.
Below, I have shared five impactful ways to do so:
The most crucial step is to implement your art. Overcoming the fear of the public’s judgement and publishing your work will provide you with the confidence to acknowledge your experience and learning. This is a healthy way to track changes in your learning environment and gain positive feedback from viewers. (Remember: Once you post your work on platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and Soundcloud, you will have the confidence to publish more art and gain insight on what you are truly capable of.)
What makes an artist unique is their ability to chart their own path. Although, there are numerous videos and blogs that suggest roadmaps to follow, a personal approach to overcome obstacles generates a reliable and trustful path. What shapes this approach is the occurrence and timing of obstacles in an artist’s career. Therefore, following a specific video or article to develop your roadmap will not be as beneficial and efficient as innovating your own pathway. (Remember: It is quite normal to have certain similarities in your approach when compared to others’. Trusting it is what is more important.)
Giving internationally recognised certified exams from Trinity College London is yet another way to keep track of your learning level in a systematic manner. Although this slows down your learning process, one can self-learn at their own pace and ace these exams. (Remember: These exams are just for tracking one’s skill level and not for evaluating ones’ capabilities.)
Staying consistent, motivated and setting deadlines is an essential skill in your journey. If there is a lack of knowledge or practice at any time, it will affect your mind to believe that you have barely made any progress. In order to avoid this, it is necessary to be aware of deadlines you miss. You can do this by utilising in-built Notes or Calendar applications on your device. (Remember: Do not compare yourself to others while tracking your progress. Your journey is unique.)
Lastly, do not be intimidated by others in any way. If you watch a video on YouTube, Instagram or Reddit, don’t rush to learn faster just because someone else is doing it better. Learning at a comfortable pace will allow you to retain information for a longer period of time and enjoy the learning process more. (Remember: Be patient, dedicated and let your art express itself.)
