How to Register a Canto Identity (CID)

Canto Identity Registration Guide

Welcome to the Canto Identity registration guide. This guide will walk you through the process of registering your Canto Identity (CID), a new protocol system designed to bring a broader, more meaningful interpretation to onchain self-expression.

Understanding Canto Identity: CID

To create the most authentic reflection of onchain identity, a user would attach multiple subprotocol NFTs to their CID, to paint a more vivid picture of who they are. It is important to note that a wallet can only have one CID registered to its address at any given time.

At launch, CIP will have three subprotocol identity trait NFTs for users to attach to their CID: Canto Namespace, PFP, and BIO.

Registering Your CID

Registering a CID is the process of attaching subprotocol traits to empower users to self-custody and customize their onchain identity to better reflect their true selves.

To register a CID, users will need to create a Canto Name, have a Canto ERC721 NFT in their wallet, and write a bio to display to the community. Once you have all those prepared, follow the instructions below to register your CID.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Connecting your Wallet

First, you will need to navigate in your browser to cantoidentity.build. If this is your first time using Canto Identity, click “connect wallet” and choose your preferred wallet option.

This guide will assume you are using MetaMask in a desktop browser, but other Ethereum-enabled browsers should work very similarly.

You must be signed in with the same wallet that you’d like to register the CID with (though you can unregister and transfer ownership later), and you must have a small amount of Canto in your wallet to pay transaction costs.

Step 2: Create a New CID

Now that you have a wallet connected, select “New CID”.

To choose a name for your CID, click on your Canto Namespace NFT and click continue. (If you have not minted a Canto Namespace NFT, you will see a notification to do so.)

Next, you can pick a PFP. To do so, select a Canto ERC721 NFT from your wallet and click continue. (If you do not have an NFT, visit Blank Rasa, Canto’s Leading NFT Marketplace, to purchase one.")

Lastly, you can create a Bio. In this section, you can combine text, punctuation, and emojis to express more of who you are in your onchain identity.

Step 3: Mint CID

Once you have selected your Namespace NFT, PFP, and written your BIO, you are ready to register your CID

Click on “Mint CID”, and then “Initiate Transactions”. A box should pop up from MetaMask asking you to confirm the transaction. Click the “Confirm” button to confirm it.

Note: You will need to confirm each transaction in your wallet. Depending on what traits you have attached to your CID, there could be up to 6 transactions to confirm.

Step 4: Registering your CID

Once all the mint transactions have been completed, the final step is to attach the CID to your wallet address.

Lastly, click “Register CID” and a MetaMask box will popup for you to approve one final transaction.

Step 5: Managing your CID

Your onchain identity is meant to change and evolve as you do, so users can delete and change any trait on their CID at any time.

You can easily manage your CID and change or update any trait attached to it from the Manage CIDs tab. In order to change any trait, click on the “X” next to the one you want to change. Note: It costs a gas fee to delete and add a new trait, so be sure that is what you want to do before doing so.

… and you’re done!

You have successfully created your Canto Identity, bringing a broader more meaningful interpretation to your onchain self-expression.
