Energy Web Dive 2025: Day One Recap
March 18th, 2025

As part of the Energy Web team, I'm excited to share some standout moments and key takeaways from Energy Web Dive 2025. This year's event highlighted impressive advancements, practical sustainability solutions, and meaningful collaborations, all dedicated to speeding up global decarbonization efforts.

SESSION 1

Speaker: Amy Westervelt

Title: Head of the Green Proofs practice at Energy Web

Topic: Energy Web Green Proofs

Session Overview

Why Green Proofs Exists:

  • Sustainability Compliance: Businesses globally are experiencing new regulatory pressures, particularly from the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Starting this year, CSRD mandates comprehensive sustainability reporting, driving businesses towards decarbonization.

  • Customer Demand for Transparency: Consumers increasingly prefer products backed by credible environmental claims. The marketplace demands tangible evidence—“receipts”—to substantiate sustainability claims, effectively combating greenwashing.

Challenges Green Proofs Addresses:

  • Sustainability initiatives are often labor-intensive, costly, and lack transparency.

  • Businesses struggle with bringing verifiable green products to market, tracking sustainability progress, and transparently sharing this data with consumers.

What Green Proofs Provides:

  • A comprehensive software solution to address corporate sustainability challenges. It specifically enables:

    1. Proving Sustainability Claims: Facilitates transparency and credibility by showcasing verifiable environmental data.

    2. Market Access: Simplifies buying and selling low-carbon commodities such as sustainable aviation fuel, low-carbon computing, EV charging, and climate-aligned bitcoin mining.

Key Business Applications:

  1. Green Product Registries:
  • Helps consortia establish product registries to scale emerging green commodity markets (e.g., biofuels, hydrogen).

  • Ensures credible tracking, secure certificate management, and exchange of commodity attributes.

  • Example - SAFc Registry:

:- Launched in partnership with RMI and EDF in December 2023.

:- Provides a "book-and-claim" approach to scale the market for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

:- Benefits: Decouples physical fuel from environmental attributes, enabling market growth beyond geographic constraints.

  • SAFc Registry Metrics (at a glance):

 * 26,944 metric tonnes of SAF issued.
 * 128,185 metric tonnes of abated CO2e.

 * 7 fuel providers, 10 production facilities, 3 countries, 36 aviation customers, 5 air transport providers.

2. Buying and Selling Low-Carbon Products:

  • Example - Green Proofs for Bitcoin (GP4BTC):

    • Certification and transparency system for climate-aligned bitcoin miners.

    • Launched May 2023, developed with over 35 crypto and energy stakeholders.

    • Collaboration includes PayPal and DMG to incentivize miners using low-emissions energy, routing on-chain transactions preferentially to climate-aligned miners.

Emerging Use Cases:

  • Low-Carbon Computing: Dynamically distributes cloud computing loads based on renewable energy availability.

  • Digital Product Passports: Blockchain-enabled transparency for EV battery lifecycle data, supporting circular economy practices.

  • Maritime Shipping, Hard-to-Abate Sectors (Steel, Cement), and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR): Provides granular data to enhance market transparency and sustainability claims.

Green Proofs' Unique Advantage ("Special Sauce"):

  • Employs Worker Node Network (WNN) technology, creating cryptographic proofs of environmental claims.

  • Operates distributed, consensus-based computing nodes executing logic independently, logging validated outcomes transparently on the Energy Web X blockchain (EWX).

  • Features include robust data privacy and customizable backend/frontend integrations to fit specific business needs.

How Green Proofs Works (Technical Overview):

  • Platform activities (e.g., certificate issuance) trigger system logic across worker nodes.

  • Worker nodes execute identical logic independently, comparing results within the network.

  • Once consensus is reached, results (like SAFc certificate issuance validity) are securely logged onto EWX blockchain, serving as an audit trail.

  • Stakeholders (users, regulators, buyers) validate transparency and system integrity through blockchain records.

Conclusion:

Energy Web’s Green Proofs platform meets the critical need for verified sustainability claims, regulatory compliance, and consumer confidence in green products and services. Through innovative blockchain technology and decentralized computing, Green Proofs empowers businesses to credibly achieve and demonstrate sustainability goals, contributing meaningfully to global decarbonization efforts.

SESSION 2

Speaker: Mihai Hrimiuc

Title: Solution Owner, Green Proofs at Energy Web

Topic: Green Proofs Solution Update

Session Overview

Mihai Hrimiuc provided key updates and insights on the Green Proofs solution, emphasizing advancements made since the previous year. The session explored the solution’s value proposition, target stakeholders, the sustainability challenges it addresses, essential factors for project success, and practical examples of its application.

Who Is Green Proofs Designed For?

Green Proofs empowers three main stakeholder groups:

  • Corporations: Companies seeking third-party validation to strengthen internal sustainability efforts, enhancing consumer trust.

  • Developers & Innovators: Those bringing sustainability solutions to market, benefiting from transparent and collaborative frameworks.

  • Industry Coalitions: Groups within sectors like aviation and maritime addressing industry-wide sustainability challenges through scalable, cost-effective solutions.

Challenges in Sustainability

Current sustainability efforts face significant challenges, primarily driven by climate change, regulatory pressures, and heightened consumer expectations. Businesses increasingly recognize the need to substantiate sustainability claims with clear, verifiable data to maintain consumer trust and compliance.

Essential Ingredients for Success

Three critical actors are essential for successful sustainability initiatives:

  • Companies: Facilitating internal alignment and external stakeholder engagement.

  • Technology Providers: Delivering solutions for transparency and traceability.

  • Independent Third Parties: Providing unbiased verification to prevent conflicts of interest.

Simplifying Sustainability Implementation

Implementing sustainability solutions independently is complex and resource-intensive. Green Proofs addresses this by offering pre-built, ready-to-deploy frameworks that accelerate and simplify project launch and scalability.

The Green Proofs Approach

The solution focuses on building trust and transparency through:

  • Automated data collection integrated into operational systems.

  • Independent, human-driven verification processes to ensure accuracy and integrity.

  • Transparent, seamless communication and data sharing among all stakeholders.

  • Easy export capabilities for sustainability reporting and integration with external systems or marketplaces.

Real-World Applications

Two notable applications demonstrate Green Proofs' effectiveness:

  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAFc): Developed with partners including RMI and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), replacing traditional carbon offsets with verifiable Sustainable Aviation Fuel certificates.

  • Katalyst (Maritime Shipping): Collaboration involving RMI, EDF, and the Center of Zero Emission Shipping, providing certified, trustworthy sustainability practices across maritime supply chains.

Why Partner Now?

The market has reached a pivotal tipping point. Early adopters of transparent sustainability verification can capitalize on rising consumer premiums and more effectively navigate regulatory landscapes, gaining a strategic advantage over competitors.

Conclusion

Green Proofs continues to evolve, strengthening its capacity to deliver transparency and trust in sustainability practices. Energy Web invites stakeholders to collaborate and accelerate their sustainability objectives with this powerful platform.
