The merge is complete so whats next? 👉 EIP-4844 (ProtoDankSharding) 1 step closer to full sharding and up to 100x in gas fee reductions for ALL rollups! 🙌

Full data sharding will still take some time to finish implementating and deploying, this EIP provides a stop-gap solution until then, implementing the TXN format that would be used in sharding without actually sharding them yet...

The new TXN format posts blobs of data to L1, containing large amounts of data that cannot be accessed by EVM execution. The blobs are pruned after 1 month. Available long enough for all actors of a L2 to retrieve it, short enough to keep disk use manageable. This allows blobs to be priced cheaper than CALLDATA, which is stored forever.

Pros of EIP-4844 ✅

• data does not need to be stored by L1 nodes

• data is not directly accessible in the EVM

• since the EVM is not involved this means Ethereum can process more rollup data without sacrificing decentralization

• a new transaction type, of the exact same format that will need to exist in full sharding

• all of the execution-layer logic required for full sharding

• all of the execution / consensus cross-verification logic required for full sharding

These changes are forwards compatible with Ethereum's scaling roadmap and get us to Vitalik's under 5 cent TXN fees!
