this is how the cyberfunk creative technologist fka Lofty305 forgot his name, became a professional video game developer, and rewrote the working definition of an artist in the process.

we never forget the music from our favorite games. growing up in Miami, Lofty always loved music and video games. some of his fav soundtracks as a kid were Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Jet Set Radio Future, and Katamari Damacy.

while a devout disciple of skate and rap culture, Lofty’s first love was computers. he taught himself how to build them and won an award in school for computer literacy. he credits his computer skills for his initial entry into music, learning to mix and produce music as a teen.

from a youth, Lofty grew up immersed in Miami’s bustling creative scene, brushing shoulders with many contemporary and future notable figures of culture.

in 2008, Lofty formed Metro Zu with his brother, Ruben Slikk, Posh God fka Freebase, and Poshtronaut aka Mr. B. from their 2010 debut effort Kushpak onward, the group’s work cleared a path for independent artists in the music landscape.

Metro Zu takes after Zoo Miami, fka Miami MetroZoo, and, like the zoo, they were a consummate wild ride with origins shrouded in intrigue. their self-named genre, cyberfunk, fused Rick James and Frank Zappa energy with outrageous freestyles over glitchy, gaming inspired electro beats.

Metro Zu’s legendary 2010s run gave us Kushpak, ElectroZlapp, Buddha Therapy, CSPG., Mink Rug, Zuology, and Z Unit, among others. cokey shores posh gang (CSPG), “Miami’s Odd Future”, included Metro Zu along with more friends and collaborators.

Lofty is a prolific solo artist in his own right, with hits like Basixx, Ort Cloud, and Talk to Me. he released thousands of songs and beats under Lofty305, encouraging fans to record over his beats, as he wants his music to inspire people to create and not only consume.

a multimedia art collective, Metro Zu exhibited paintings in fine art galleries and sold custom clothing they handmade. they started on myspace and bandcamp, not soundcloud. sound and ethos-wise, they continued ideas introduced by Lil B the Based God and Keyboard Kid.

all that said, make no mistake: the multicolor dreaded, party-never-stops aesthetic that came to define a “soundcloud rapper” in the public consciousness started with Metro Zu, for better and for worse…

Metro Zu soon gained notoriety far beyond Miami. by 2016, the world’s largest museums exhibited art featuring Lofty.. but for, iforgotmyname, that quickly started to feel like a world he was leaving behind…

“i got close to the top of a stairway and saw it ended in a pit… I turned around and saw a flight of stairs that didn’t end in a pit, so i had to walk all the way down the stairs to go back up the other way.”

iforgotmyname often speaks in metaphysical language as a form of self-protection. he references meditating on the past to heal himself and to guide his former self toward the path he is on now.

around that time, iforgotmyname first forayed into game dev, building javascript projects in construct. from there, he spent 3yrs+ in the digital dojo, teaching himself blender and unreal engine.

alongside smaller projects like 2D fighter, Streets of Rage, he self-released his first major game, Underland Ambush, through his publishing house Alligator truck. the run-and-gun action adventure resides within iforgotmyname’s game universe, Space Pirate Sound.

the Space Pirate Sound is a primordial sentient spirit living in all soundwaves. it grants those of great valor the power to manipulate sound and shape the universe. a space pirate DJ colony takes in protagonist Selecta Dax while he flees the anti-rave police force, Axis Rangers.

“When Selecta Dax, the infamous space pirate, leaps into a dark abyss in flight of his captors, he is plunged into an unfamiliar realm inhabited by gnomes, killer clowns, rocket powered raptors, and to his surprise, the slain enemies of his many violent conquests.

Brave the Underland Ambush and survive the afterlife to escape the infinite loop of mortality!”

as he got deeper into game dev, he abandoned the stage name Lofty305 and became iforgotmyname. the film bulletproof monk planted the seed, when the monk’s master says he has nothing else to teach him. the monk must now forget his name, only he already has.

“the name change was to change patterns of thinking and to be able to introduce myself to people more freely and cleanly and to present my video game without the baggage that came with Lofty305. i’m always gonna be proud of my work as Lofty305, but only some of it, not all of it. i want iforgotmyname to be a positive legacy. i want to be proud of the things i’ve done, and be associated with creation, not self-destruction.”

iforgotmyname changed his name from Lofty305 because he wanted people to take him seriously as a game dev and not simply to support his games due to his name or music. he feels people should accept that his creativity is multifaceted.

iforgotmyname laments the fact that Black kids are on the outside looking in when it comes to opportunities in the tech space, and he wants to lead by example to change that. he plans to develop partnerships with brands and universities to bus in Black kids to learn game development. he stresses the importance of having Black teachers, so kids come to class and see someone who looks like them.

“im telling this story not to take anyone down, but to set an example for forward thinkers of the future.”

and that is how cyberfunk rapper / artist (or as Lofty says, “ortist”) from Miami became professional game dev @iforgotmynamex2. he is stoic when it comes to his past, and he is sensitive about some of the details, because he doesn’t want to rub anyone the wrong way or come off as self-aggrandizing. he literally just wants to make “a cool, fun game” – the game he’s always wanted to play – with music at the very heart of it.

as we’ve witnessed firsthand, when iforgotmyname goes into “dev mode” he gets hyperfocused, spending days on end modeling and coding cyberspace worlds with laser vision.

Space Pirate Sound permeates the universe connecting all people, places and things, doubling as the name for Lofty’s game studio. he likens it to a decentralized Black lucasarts. the mystical force of nature recurs in iforgotmyname’s latest upcoming release, SOUNDCLASH.

SOUNDCLASH is a 3d multiplayer video game built on unreal engine. while in pre alpha, gameplay is already functional and, most importantly, super fun! we’re so excited to be a part of this adventure and we can’t wait to battle!

SOUNDCLASH is based on the sound clash culture of Jamaica. in sound clashes, DJ crews compete to play the music that grows their crowd the biggest, the “champion sound.” crews produce and play 1/1 exclusive physical singles called dubplates to stand out.

in SOUNDCLASH, your crowd is clones recently liberated from certain slavery and servitude when their space transport crash lands on your rave planet. “Soundblast” the clones to draw them to your stage; once your crowd gets big enough, drop exclusive songs as critical attacks.

the first exclusive music for SOUNDCLASH will come from songs carefully selected from the mayk.it app. iforgotmyname chose to partner with mayk.it for this game because the app is all about giving power to you, the creators, and expanding your audience.

record songs through the mayk.it app here. for the genesis SOUNDCLASH! song collection, we’ll mint 40 mayk.it-recorded songs as nfts. holders of the 10 genesis avatars can claim 4 songs per avatar, plug 1st dibs on all future game exclusives. proceeds go directly to song maykers.
