On the evening of October 12th, at 10:10 p.m., I suddenly saw my friend Wang Junxiu post in the Han Zun Cultural Research Institute group:
"Mr. Xu Yinong, a well - known editor, passed away due to heart failure at midnight on October 13th in Beijing, at the age of 96.
Mr. Xu Yinong is a senior editor who has had far - reaching influence and outstanding contributions to China's publishing industry and academic circles!
Xu Zhuoyun said that Mr. Xu Yinong is a spiritual banner of China's publishing industry. His enthusiasm and dedication to life, his reflection on and shouldering of China's progress, are enough to make many of his contemporaries look up to him."

I couldn't believe it at first. I remembered that I had met Mr. Xu Yinong several times 18 years ago, and there were many wonderful memories.
It all started when I sought him out to edit the book "The Country of Thought: All Our Dignity Lies in Thought" by Xiong Peiyun, my colleague at "South Wind Window", out of admiration. He readily agreed, and soon sent the "editor's notes" he specifically wrote (attached below). Xiong Peiyun was also very touched after reading these notes, so we met and had in - depth chats at his home several times, and each time it felt like a spring breeze. "The Country of Thought" was published as scheduled and has been re - published again and again. The edited text was proofread and edited by Mr. Xu word by word.
During that period, I had quite a lot of interactions with Mr. Xu. During our friendship despite the age gap, I also learned about many of his legendary experiences, including the fact that he disguised himself as a man for many years, including that the "Yangtze River, Yangtze River" he edited was on the desk of the main national leaders in the 1980s, why He Bochuan became quiet after writing "China on the Mountain Ridge", how the intersection of "The Collected Works of Gu Zhun" and Guizhou People's Publishing House came about, and after his retirement, at the invitation of Dong Xiuyu, the general manager of SDX Joint Publishing Company, he edited the "SDX - Harvard - Yenching Academic Book Series", which has had a great influence until now, as well as the "Constitutionalism Translation Series", the "Academic Library of Christian Studies through the Ages", etc. At that time, I had just entered the book publishing industry, and every time we got together for in - depth chats, I felt that I benefited a lot.
Time passed quickly, and many details can't be remembered, but two things left a relatively deep impression.
First, at that time, Mr. Xu was also worried about Liu Hong's son Zi You. I said that I would also donate 1,000 yuan and gave it to Mr. Xu. A few days later, Mr. Xu told me that he had paid 100 yuan for me. It turned out that I only gave him 900 yuan.
Second, in the spring of 2006, I went to the United States to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program. Mr. Xu asked me to bring a few books to his niece. His niece was a former colleague of Hu Shuli. After leaving the international department of China Business Times, she went to The China Press, and at that time, she was the executive deputy editor - in - chief of The Multi - Dimensional Times. After meeting on Long Island, New York, she also invited me to a meal. Before the meal, I met Mr. He Pin, and we chatted for a long time. During the chat, He Pin kept receiving calls from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. It seemed that he had a wide network of relationships and information. He also said that the Chinese mainland had been wooing him, but he said that a state of being neither too close nor too far was quite good. After returning to Beijing, I brought back the gifts from his niece to him.
I should have met Mr. Xu several times after 2007 and 2008, but there were no deeply - remembered events. Later, I was busy and didn't contact him much, but I often thought of his guidance, support, and promotion when I just entered the publishing industry. Until two days ago when I saw the news of his departure, I wrote these words in a scattered manner.
After seeing it, my friend Qiu Jiaqiu, the initiator of True Image, came to ask me to write for their public account. So, based on the words I just posted on Moments, I wrote this article.
Mr. Xu Yinong changed his name by himself. Guessing from the original intention of the name change, he was determined to be a doctor for our ancient nation marked by agricultural civilization from the depth of his heart (using words as a knife to deeply analyze), which is of great significance! What a great person! Magnificent!
He will live in our hearts forever!

(Attached: Xu Yinong's Editor's Notes
Today, I started to review the manuscript of Xiong Peiyun's "The Country of Thought". Before reading the manuscript, I first opened the "Words from the People by the Window" at the beginning of the February 1st - 15th issue of "South Wind Window" left by He Jiangtao when he sent the manuscript, wanting to see what kind of "first impression" the pen of this highly - known gentleman in the cultural circle, whom I had no chance to meet and knew nothing about, would give me. Unexpectedly, this short article of less than 1,700 words moved me so much! I couldn't help but immediately call him to pay tribute and give thanks for the "gold content" of this article!
When my friends in the academic and cultural publishing circles, who are concerned about the country's fate and the people's hardships, and I talk about the real - life hardships of the people, we are always full of "anger" and even "despair". However, Xiong Peiyun's wonderful writing has given me - and should also give all readers another kind of enlightenment:
First, his interpretation of a "harmonious society".
Starting from Gao Shangquan's interpretation of a "harmonious society": The character "he" (harmony) has one "mouth" and one "grain", indicating that "everyone has food to eat"; the character "xie" (harmony) has everyone having "words", indicating that "everyone has the right to speak". He pointed out that the deconstruction of "harmony" is not just a coincidence in word - formation, but also reflects the demands of the times in transitional China, that is, to properly solve the "livelihood issues" and "democratic issues".
Second, his interpretation of an "open society".
He analyzed that today's China, as a "gradually - opening society", is a society with "the same aspiration but different virtues", because everyone yearns for freedom and happiness while having their own different internal moral desires. Because of "different virtues", democratic contracts become necessary; because of "the same aspiration", democratic contracts become possible. For China today, everyone needs to break the barriers of self - isolation, "If you acquiesce to a portion of your freedom, China will take a step forward".
Third, his interpretation of the "history of human civilization".
Throughout history, from ancient times to the present, from east to west, the entire history of human civilization can be summed up as a "history of democratic evolution", that is: a history of developing from violent democracy of "fighting with sticks, simple knives, and guns" to peaceful democracy of "fighting with words".
Fourth, finally focusing on "the transformation and construction of China today".
He pointed out convincingly that no single doctrine or school can come up with a wonderful prescription to cure all the long - accumulated chronic diseases of Chinese society today. Whether it is the government's macro - grasp or the people's grassroots practice, both need the courage of pioneers, but to start trends without being masters! It requires exploration from top to bottom and common growth!
What a great saying, "To start trends without being masters"! Such a short article of more than a thousand words, without seeing swords and swords and without thorns, has touched all the key points of China's national fate and the people's hardships today with pinpoint - like writing. Before even starting to read the manuscript, I have been won over by Mr. Xiong.
