Inevitably, we’re stepping into the era of Web 3.0 Internet. The rise of decentralized socials in 2022 was totally outstanding.
We have witnessed emergence and development of the most relevant social - Lens Protocol, composable and decentralized social graph built with features to serve the Web 3 community.
However, the essential part of each social platform - smooth, simple and fast communication.
And when we talk about Web 3.0, there should be an exceptionally unique solution able to compete with Web 2.0 dApps.
XMTP (Extensible Message Transport Protocol) - open protocol and network for secure web3 messaging, that allows communication between blockchain accounts. It’s a perfect platform for Web 3.0 dApps to establish convenient communication for their users.Currently, Lens Protocol Apps use XMTP for exchanging messages between users across applications.
Key point of XMTP is that it stores all messages, which are tied not to client app, but to web identities.
These web identities possess their own portable inbox that can be accessed by using app built with XMTP.
Portable inbox allows users to own their messages, and send, receive, and view them in any client app connected to the XMTP network.
Like a bridge, protocol connects apps, users and communities in the Web 3.0 ecosystem.
Currently few XMTP utilities available:
User-to-user direct messages.
Direct messaging helps users connect and build community with one-to-one messaging.
App-to-user notifications.
Apps can always keep users informed with timely event-based notifications.
Creator-to-community announcements.
Apps can deliver important news to their users.
XMTP supports one-2-one messages, but group messaging can be also constructed with XMTP SDK.
Secure & private messaging.
XMTP is designed to provide end-to-end encryption and other security features to guarantee that messages remain private and secure. It helps to ensure that messages can only be read by the intended recipients.
This means that the message is encrypted on the sender's device and remains encrypted during transmission over the network until it is decrypted by the recipient's device.
Importantly, recipients who are suspicious about the sender's authenticity can always see public information about the sender's account.
When messaging an already known recipient, the sender needs only to type the address of the recipient. To send a message to a new recipient, the sender should pass a few steps: retrieving of public key, invitation to both parts from clients app etc.
Accessibility
XMTP is an open protocol, meaning that it is publicly available and is accessible for any developer to build on.
Protocol gives developers freedom to build apps in different forms and shapes with only requirement to implement XMTP's client protocols.
Recently, they announced XMTP Grants for developers working with web3 messaging projects to foster ecosystem growth.
This could allow for greater collaboration, innovation, and community involvement in the development and evolution of the protocol and Web 3.0 messaging.
Interoperability
XMTP's most unique feature is delivering interoperable messaging to its users.
Have you ever thought of receiving all your messages from different socials in one app?
Or start your conversation on WhatsApp and continue it on Instagram?
Sounds mind-blowing, but possible!
We can finally stop searching for certain messages in a dozen apps on our phones and find it in one place.
All messages will be stored in the XMTP network before and after retrieval.
Users will be able to receive, view and send messages in all apps built on XMTP.
Web3 Integration
Even though protocol is still emerging and evolving, we can already discover plenty of Apps in the Lens ecosystem developed on XMTP.
Let’s check a few of them!
Converse
The newest app on IOs built with XMTP – Converse.
Converse collects all the Lens and XMTP messages.
I tested Converse with my frens from CryptoGirls DAO and was amazed by how smooth and fast it works. As an active Web 3.0 user, I found it challenging opening daily Lenster, Orb and other apps DMs.
Converse can definitely simplify the life of Lens users by storing all messages together.
It’s still on TestFlight, but you can text Pol Maire on Lenster to get invited and give it a try!
To get set up, you just need to connect your Lens profile wallet.
You also can search for any of your friends, and start a conversation just by typing their EVM 0x address, .eth or .lens address.
Small tip: don’t forget to turn on notifications and enjoy your communication with frens!
WalletRoulette
Another dApp built on XMTP protocol, - WalletRoulette, sort of Chatroulette on Web 3.0, but with exclusive features. It main goal is to connect random Web 3.0 people based on information from their wallets: NFTs and on-chain events.
Fun way to expand your network of Frens in Web and get useful insights.
Club opens daily for 30 min, you check notifications on the website.
Konnektr
The next XMTP chat I want to highlight is Konnektr – social networking with decentralized DMs.
It's not available for testing now, but you can become Konnektr early user by filling this form (https://twitter.com/konnektrHQ/status/1628764117308952576?s=20).
Pinsta
New features were introduced with Pinsta - Web 3.0 Pinterest on Lens Protocol.
XMTP protocol outdone themselves and enabled GIFs, images and videos in DMs.
Share your favorite GIFs and Photos by using Pinsta.
Currently the feature works only with Buttrfly.app, but we’re waiting for more to come.
Mintify
The best news for traders - XMTP was recently integrated into Mintify, Pro trading terminal that aggregates NFT liquidity from public and private marketplaces.
Mintify users will be able to chat with specific collectors, view history of their DMs, engage in private chats etc.
Which activities can be done now to be an early user of XMTP?
First of all, if you’re not a Lens user till now, get a Lens profile ASAP.
When it’s done, apply to get an invite in Converse and Konnektr.
Stay active in projects below.
If you’re a developer, there’s a lifetime opportunity to build your own Web 3 messaging app on XMTP and get a Grant from Protocol.
Preferable area of interest: new content types, multi-chain support, developer tools, and other unique integrations.
You can also join XMTP Discord to present your project or learn more about XMTP SDK and check XMTP documentation.
Protocol already raised 25 million USD in 2 investment rounds led by Offline Ventures.
While the protocol is still in development and has not yet been widely adopted, it could potentially play an important role in enabling secure, private communication within Web 3.0 decentralized applications and networks.
XMTP is a logical continuation of ongoing trend and development of Web 3.0 socials and has no competition amongst other protocols as it delivers forcible functionality, interoperable messaging experience and fast execution.
