Everyone tells themselves a story about what America is all about.
It’s a narrative that has had tremendous power for 2 and a half centuries.
“Land of Opportunity” is a big one, for sure.
“The American Dream” is related to that.
For Jews, one of the parts of the story was that “America is different” when it comes to anti-semitism.
And while we don’t have (fortunately, at the moment) state-sponsored anti-Semitism, we are seeing a sad and massive increase in the amount of anti-Semitism.
This most recent one, from the University of Rochester, is particularly disturbing. “Wanted” posters for Jews.
A part of that myth, however, is not just that the state won’t stand for it, it’s that “American values” means that other citizens won’t tolerate it either and won’t stay silent in the face of it.
We’ll see.
