Chapter 1: Episode II

“Fantastic! You’ve made the right choice! I dare not think of what might have befallen you had you decided to go it alone. You see my people have a natural affinity for traversing this sort of terrain in the same way a Hyapethian can seamlessly navigate the great dunes of Areturusia.

It’s about being truly attuned to your senses. The act of navigation should be that of instinct, and there ought be no need for a map if you are walking the paths your ancestors carved out over a millenia. This is how we are, and have always been, and it has kept us relatively safe from incursion from those who seek to do us ill will. Although, I must admit, our people have become somewhat stubborn in their conviction about the purity of the Forest, which, owing to the declining numbers of our tribe has led to some internal rumblings within the court.

You see, the Forest is plentiful in natural wonders, but for those seeking fame and fortune, there is greater wealth to be made beyond the mountain pass. We seldom talk of these things, yet it is a universal truth that the old ways are slipping from our collective consciousness. This new age, the one of Xudo, brings forth an interesting question for my people – what role will we seek to play in the coming conflict?

Traditionally we are defensive in nature but the call from the court to muster men for raids beyond the mountain is escalating. You see our Lord seeks to go on the offensive and carve out a safe tract of land for us between the forest and the Mountain pass. Customarily this has been home to those who we call the Dwellnar, a sort of nomadic sister tribe to our own people, who we’ve had an uneasy truce with over the years. Tensions have somewhat flared recently as their Lord, the sensible yet increasingly senile Djodor, has seeded more and more power to his power-hungry son. This has now caused a rift between our people, as trade and barter, traditional staples of our society have ceased to move beyond the Mountain pass. You see, Djodor’s son demands a heavy tax on all goods that travel through his lands and our people refuse to pay, hence the current crisis. It is a tricky issue for one such as myself to weigh into much, for you see my mother was half Dwellnar, which in these times does not win one many favours. There are others such as myself that call for diplomacy over force, but the climate within the Lord’s court remains favouringly on the path for war. But come now, that is enough talk of the internal politics of my people. We’re almost at my camp and there you may rest and recover.

However, I must ask you to clarify to me who you are and what you are doing out here before we enter my village. You see, I by virtue of walking this path with you are vouching for your good character. You must do me this courtesy so that the people of village may do the same. Do not be alarmed, it matters not who you are, but rather only if your intentions are true. We judge you yes, but based solely on character,

- So my friend, can you tell me who you are?”
