Dope Wars Summary

Dope Wars is a fully on-chain Loot-style game based on StarkNet. It was initially started by perama and is currently being developed with the Cartridge team as the core contributors. The project began construction in August 2021 but experienced a halt in development during the year 2021-2022. Dope Wars has also get the OP Grant.

Dope Wars is a game based on the street-themed universe, inspired by the classic game Drug War and influenced by the GTA style. The team aims to build a GTA-style gaming universe on the foundation of street culture. The first playable game mode in Dope Wars is called "Roll Your Own." Roll Your Own is not only a blockchain adaptation of the classic game Drug War but also serves as the game engine for Dope Wars based on StarkNet L2.

Dope Wars is an active and significant derivative branch of Loot, apart from Loot Realms. It was initiated by @Dennison.og on the Ethereum mainnet on August 31, 2021, as a Loot-style Free Mint project with a total supply of 8,000. On September 4, airdrops of 125,000 $PAPER tokens were distributed to each NFT holder.

Unlike the magical theme of Loot, Dope Wars adopts the street-style approach similar to GTA, attracting a considerable number of enthusiasts upon its launch. The community surrounding Dope Wars is vibrant, and the development quickly shifted towards the direction of the game, possibly benefiting from its cultural attributes.

Taking inspiration from the classic game Drug War, Dope Wars aims to build a GTA-style gaming universe by leveraging the grassroots and street culture spirit that Loot embodies. The modular expansion is facilitated by the blockchain's characteristics. Thus, the first fully on-chain game engine - RYO entered development after being approved in the community's fourth proposal. The project was initially initiated and led by perama.eth, with the Cartridge founding team, including tarrence.eth, later becoming core contributors to the project.

RYO is not actually a generic game engine. It rather provides a modular set of standards and interfaces centered around the content of Dope Wars at that time. It allows developers to have more efficient development within the Dope Wars ecosystem, somewhat resembling a set of tools for developing mods. The functionality of RYO includes allowing players to customize a game room, set map, character, and other conditions to play the game, catering to their gaming preferences and objectives. Through this approach, players can personalize their gaming experience based on their preferences and creativity. They can interact and compete with other players in the customized game room. This customization feature provides players with more autonomy and control, enabling them to create a unique and personalized gaming environment.

Without a doubt, this unique experience has undoubtedly brought valuable insights to the Cartridge team in terms of game engine development. As a result, they have become significant contributors in the Dojo ecosystem, one of the three important contributors.

Afterwards, Dope Wars migrated its assets to the OP network and developed its own visual marketplace. Additionally, the game Dope Frenzy was launched on the StarkNet network. However, as the market cooled down, the development of the game entered a stagnant state. Currently, you can experience it at the following link: 👇

With the emergence of Dojo, the Cartridge team officially announced in June 2023 that they will be remaking RYO based on the Dojo engine. It is expected that soon, the once-abandoned fully on-chain version of the Drug War game will regain attention.

Part of the paragraph is summarized from:

The following video is an accelerated version of the current Dope Wars' release game, Dope Frenzy, showcasing the gameplay experience from a player's perspective.

(I have asked the Dope War official that Frenzy is also a seperate game of RYO. It's an example of the things they can do when they put our art assets to work. The final product has not been decided yet.) *Frenzy is not the beta or alpha version of RYO.

Dope Wars Autonomous World

The Cartridge team proposes to seed Dope Wars on StarkNet with the Dope Wars Autonomous World and build "Roll Your Own" on top of it.

The Cartridge team will utilize the Dojo engine of Autonomous Worlds to kickstart Dope World by creating a standardized world contract and developing components and systems representing Dope Wars hustlers, items, and $paper (game assets). These characters and items will serve as a foundation for ecosystem expansion by introducing additional components and systems that interact with them.

Specific details regarding world expansion will be announced by the project team in the future.

Roll Your Own - An on-chain adaptation of the game ‘Drug War.’

Players will enter locations within Dope Wars, engage in arbitrage of drug prices across different regions, and strive to amass wealth and dominate the streets. The Roll Your Own game involves a sequential iterative process, and a version is currently available for players to experience.

Roll Your Own (RYO) expands the core drug arbitrage mechanism into a multiplayer environment, creating a competitive and evolving gaming environment. In this environment, each player's actions will influence the in-game economy.

In each round, players will travel to different regions, check the current drug market prices, and decide whether to buy or sell based on the situation. Player decisions directly impact the market price fluctuations. For example, if a player buys a large quantity of drugs in a certain region, the market price may increase; whereas if players sell a large quantity, the market price may decrease. This adds a new strategic layer to the game, as players need to make decisions based on market trends and other players' actions.

Additionally, to avoid excessive determinism, random events occur between rounds, affecting the prices. This means that market prices are not only influenced by player actions but also by random events within the game, making it more dynamic and challenging. Players need to adjust their strategies based on market conditions and random events to succeed in the highly competitive environment. Furthermore, Cartridge rewards those who support development costs and participate in Dope World with $PAPER tokens.

The Dope Wars ecosystem

*The Dope Wars ecosystem currently consists of hustlers, items, and paper. These assets require development code to be reflected on StarkNet and Dope World. Currently, $PAPER exists on the Ethereum mainnet and can be bridged to StarkNet using a cross-chain bridge.

Hustlers and Items currently exist on the OP chain, and the team has mentioned developing a bridge to connect them to the StarkNet chain in Dope World.

*The team has expressed that the development of Dope World can proceed simultaneously with Roll Your Own, but there are resource limitations on the Cartridge side. The team may undertake this process after the Roll Your Own Alpha stage.

Version Iterations of Roll Your Own

Roll Your Own- Alpha

A minimal viable game, enabling players to spawn into a round, travel between locations, trade product, and stack cash.

The alpha version of the game will not incorporate hustlers, items, or paper. It will serve as an opportunity to test and iterate on the core game loop.

Alpha will be deployed to testnet and available for testing through a web ui.

ETA: May/June

Roll Your Own- Beta

Extension of the Alpha version, incorporating player feedback into the game loop. Introduction of Hustlers, Items, and Lobbies.

Lobbies are akin to "servers" in traditional gaming, a configuration of the RYO game. For example a lobby host can configure parameters such as round duration, turn system, starting stash, max players, etc.

Items will have stats that influence gameplay. For example, rocking an ak47 could make you slow, less likely to be mugged, and more likely to be chased by the cops. In this iteration, hustlers will be able to select a loadout before joining a lobby.

Beta will be deployed on testnet and available for testing through a web and mobile ui.

ETA: September/October

Roll Your Own- Mainnet

Mainnet deployment of the Roll Your Own on top of Dope World. This version will incorporate mainnet item ownership. Buy in to rounds with PAPER, use your hustler and items to win the streets, and take home the prize pool.

ETA: TBD

Game Experience

The current iteration, Frenzy, is a beta multiplayer mode with a street-style GTA aesthetic. The game lacks difficulty, and the version is relatively simple. Players can explore the streets and acquire various weapons and tools, including knives, axes, and guns. They can use these weapons to eliminate other players, destroy structures like cars and buildings, and even employ vehicles to attack opponents. Additionally, players may encounter randomly spawning items at different locations.

Since the current iteration is still in its early stages, there are no specific PvP modes or developed game strategies. Players engage in activities such as street-based combat and destruction. The mentioned gameplay elements will serve as reference points for the scene.

  • Enter the Game

Click "Start" to enter the game. Upon the countdown's completion, players will enter the game with a gun.

  • Pick Up/Drop Equipment

Players can press E to pick up/replace equipment, such as axes, guns, knives, and more, while on the streets.

  • Kill Other Players

Players can use weapons to kill other players. Please note that when shot, your health bar will decrease.

  • Destroy Street Structures/Collide with Other Players

Players can drive vehicles and destroy street structures, such as fire hydrants, by colliding with them. They can also collide with other players.

  • Destroy Vehicles

Players can use guns to destroy street vehicles.

  • Respawn

On the streets, players can respawn at random locations by touching the purple small arrows.

  • THE JAMINGO

The entrance to this bar scene is exceptionally entertaining, resembling a lively dance floor. (I was unable to locate this scene during my experience; the video is shared by the community.)

Video for THE JAMINGO:

Personal Game Experience

The current iteration available for play is in its early stages. The in-game countdown shows 88 minutes, but in reality, it ends in just 5 minutes, which leaves little time for a satisfying experience lol. Despite the limited gameplay, the overall game experience is enjoyable, with an immersive visual style. As the iterations progress and introduce elements like strategic gameplay and competition, I believe the experience will greatly improve.
