Apparently drinking till you collapse is a common sight in Japan.
Once in a while I read some very interesting headlines and this was just gold.
Having a bad week?
Let’s see if your week was a bad as this Japanese salaryman losing critical information of an entire city because he was intoxicated beyond belief.
“The unnamed man in his 40s had stored the USB stick in his bag when he went out for drinks at a local restaurant in Osaka prefecture’s industrial Amagasaki city on Tuesday. After several hours of boozing, the IT worker fell asleep on the street and by the time he woke up, the bag containing the flash drive was gone, local media reported.”
Oh by the way, it is super common for salaryman in Japan to drink and imbibe heavily on a week night.
The report made it seemed like someone took it from him.
And seemed to float over the fact that he was piss drunk on a working night.
Turns out he was the one that misplaced it.
I’m surprised he can actually remember he is missing the bag after waking up.
“Though the flash drive was encrypted, it contained the personal data of Amagasaki’s 465,177 residents, including their dates of birth, addresses, bank account numbers, and tax details. His company, BIPROGY, was hired by the city’s government to find out who in the city was eligible for tax exemptions.”
That USB drive contained the personal details of Amagasaki’s entire population.
Well, at least he bothered to encrypt the USB drive.
I really wanted to know HOW he found the bag!
Turns out, he retraced his steps and vaguely recall leaving his bag unattended at an apartment building he randomly passed by while in a drunken stupor.
Come on, really?
His memory served him well even when he is knocked-out drunk after hours of binge drinking.
Plus, how safe is that Japanese City?
Random dude leaves his bag unattended for hours, even days, and nobody bothers to touch or steal it?
You really have to give it to the Japanese and their culture.
The society is safe, cultured and so well-behaved.
Then again, drinking till you literally pass out on the street during a busy work day is considered “normal”.
I simply cannot wrap my head around that one.
This reminds me of a time when I was in Tokyo many years ago.
I once saw a drunk salaryman, in full suit and clutching a leather bag sleeping soundly on the road.
Yep, not beside the road, but ON the road as cars carefully maneuver around his body.
Police came and were just so patient and understanding, nudging and calling him softly to wake up.
For a first world city well known for its cleanliness and tidiness, this is a bizarre sight on the streets.
Its a bizarre sight for sure.
I am pretty sure he would be yelled at and arrested if it was in the US.
Anyways, cybersecurity is no laughing matter.
Nations, cities, government, companies and individuals are taking notice of just how vital it is to safeguard their digital information.
In a world where all our personal and company information are increasingly put onto the cloud, cybersecurity cannot be taken for granted.
Cybersecurity is like insurance and condoms, you rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.
