Translating the book "Deep" was a serendipitous journey for me last year (2022). I had never published any physical books for the general public before. One day in the first half of the year, the book's editor found me through a Facebook group by chance and asked me if I would be interested in translating an English book about freediving. This book, "Deep" (Author: James Nestor), has been translated into several languages and has been selected as the "Best Non-Fiction" by editors on the Amazon.com website. After taking on this work, I gradually realized how challenging it is to translate text. It is a process of re-creating something that you have first read, understood, and felt. You must first read and experience it yourself, and then try to express the same content and feelings in another language after exploring the author's emotions. This is not a literal translation, but rather a form of re-creation. During the translation process, I often communicated with the editor. When he asked for my suggestions for the Chinese title, I strongly recommended "Deep," a single word as the traditional Chinese title.
The word "deep" implies the solitary state of mind of freediving and its environment, the depths of the ocean, but also the depths of the soul.
