Why do p2e games need dynamic NFTs?

Ilya Zhurin, OG Protocol business development lead, answers this question.

Dynamic NFTs in p2e games

Dynamic NFTs enable blockchain games to do more with their digital game assets. They allow users to experience a more realistic game flow, as NFTs evolve based on players' actions and respond to their progress. As a result, the gameplay feels more real, and players stay excited about coming back to play more and seeing their achievements reflected in their NFTs.

I believe that games with strong in-game economies can really do well to adopt dynamic NFTs. Also, with the right dynamic logic baked in the NFTs, interest in the secondary market can be high, leading to higher volume and royalties.

Ideas on how to use dynamic NFT for p2e

All kinds of events may trigger the change of NFTs — currency rates, NFT price, users’ addresses, balances, in-app events, weather, sports news… Your imagination is the only limit. Here just some examples of how you can use this technology in p2e games:

● Standard avatars evolve into mages, warriors, or miners after several in-game quests. Their appearance and stats change, giving each type certain advantages over others;

● fighters get scars and bruises after a certain number of PVP fights;

● swords and armor start shining with green light after enchanting;

● avatars' faces turn sad when ETH drops below $2000;

● rainy weather in real life reduces car speed in a racing game.

Web3 current market state

The play-to-earn market is quite saturated, as many gaming projects compete for players' attention. Generous giveaways proved only to be a temporary solution for onboarding players, as they attract people who come for the money, not for the game. Such players leave for the next shiny thing as soon as in-game rewards dry up.

For a game to be successful in the long term, it should be interesting to play even without the rewards, though building such a game is challenging. This is why I believe that in the future we will see a lot of partnerships between Web2 gaming studios and Web3 projects. Teams that have both game-building and blockchain experience will have good chances to survive and thrive.

I also see more games trying to deliver interactive game-like interfaces even before the game is ready, giving users something to do with their digital assets, in turn keeping their audience engaged.

How will the OG Protocol help p2e game developers solve their problems?

Game builders are looking for ways to boost user engagement and retention, as well as onboarding new users, and dynamic NFTs are a great way to achieve these goals. However, this is a relatively new technology, so the implementation may be challenging. Game development teams would need to hire additional developers and invest time and resources in implementation and ongoing support.

Our team has over 4 years and several dynamic NFT projects in our portfolio. So, we decided to start OG Protocol to enable web3 teams to achieve their business goals by helping them integrate 3D dynamic NFTs and ensuring smooth and hassle-free ongoing support of dynamic changes in their NFTs. With OG Protocol it can be done more efficiently compared to in-house support.

The future of p2e games

I believe that in the near future more blockchain games will take advantage of dynamic NFTs. We're still in a very early stage and the awareness is relatively low. Some games are implementing dynamic NFTs already, and I see this trend picking up speed in the next 6-12 months. Evolving NFTs will bring blockchain gaming to the next level of interactivity, blurring the borders between games and life.
