A Hard Decision for a Smoooth Launch

Today is finally the day, mint day! Everything is going to go smoothly leading up to the launch! Right?… Right?… Sadly the answer was no.

When we checked our backend API today, we noticed many anomalies and page refresh requests to pages that did not even excise, so after checking the website's server load, we were shocked to find a hefty load on our website that all came from the same IP.

Since blocking this address, we have been able to return from our degraded performance to normalcy.

After speaking with a few experts about this issue, we have sadly concluded that a nefarious actor was looking to sabotage our launch and was trying to DDoS attack our website. Luckily, the threat mitigation software we had in place could detect this and reduce the impact of this attack.

Unfortunately, these things are part of life and the internet. So what can we do against those things?

Probably nothing, but what we can do is prepare.

We are currently in the process of installing a state-of-the-art server overload protection software to fend off bots, denial-of-service, and other nefarious actors who might be looking to crash the party, but things can never be 100% protected, and therefore, we have currently preparing some countermeasures:

  1. We are getting help from leading threat mitigation experts, who will closely monitor the website, and its load to ensure a smooth launch.
  2. Regarding website crashes, we have also prepared a SECOND website, located in another data center as the first one, so we have a backup even in case of total website failure.
  3. For Minting issues and other problems, we have created an emergency google form that can be used to raise concerns and inform the team about any issues - our support team will try to answer these inquiries as quickly as possible!

We hoped to get these measures ready before launch, but after consulting with our tech lead, we have sadly concluded that this would not be possible since a typical domain usually takes up to 12H for the DNS to propagate across servers.

On top of a very jam-packed minting day, this technical issue would have not work well in our favour, and the likelihood of everything not being ready before launch would be way higher than we feel comfortable with, so we have made the tough decision to delay our launch by 24H.

There is only one Mint, so we want to do it justice instead of rushing it, and these measures are the only way we feel comfortable launching.

Nevertheless, on the bright side, we will launch a list of all wallets confirmed to be on the WL, so there will still be ample time to remedy it in case of an issue.

We, as the entire team, are very sorry for this unfortunate turn of events, and we hope these remedies will ensure a smooth and successful launch tomorrow!; we cannot wait for everyone to meet their Wizards! 🧙‍♀️
