Why Polygon?

We have selected Polygon as the blockchain to power #GOTL. This was an extremely important decision for our development team, and we would like to explain our decision-making process.

We would like to start by saying that Ethereum's worldview and values have been a major influence on #GOTL and we would love to contribute to them. Unfortunately, however, we could not go with Ethereum because their gas fee is still very expensive for the kind of NFT we are developing. This is why we selected Polygon, which is considered to be the most compatible with Ethereum, as our next best option. Here, "compatibility" is not just about standards such as EVM compatibility. It also takes into account its presence, culture, and other factors. We focused on this because we believe that the sustainability of a chain depends on the combined effect of these factors.

Our reasons for choosing Polygon are as follows:

  1. Transaction (#, fees, speed)
While no post-purchase transactions are usually required for static NFTs such as art and PFPs, #GOTL is a dynamic NFT that users can customize and add items to, so it involves many transactions. However, the number of transactions is smaller than that of DeFi. Based on these points, we concluded that we did not need to keep costs and speed competitive with DeFi even though we require gas fees lower than Ethereum.

  2. Presence
OpenSea support was the biggest deciding factor in terms of the chain's presence, followed by compatibility with Twitter, Meta, and other major platforms.

  3. Support
Another deciding factor was the support structure available for the chain because #GOTL is not limited to one-time purchases but is an ongoing and expanding NFT service. Polygon has a division called Polygon Studios to promote the development of blockchain games and NFTs, with a representative in East Asia.

  4. Culture and Community
Having a community of people who are trying out similar technologies and content is a big help in developing and sustaining a service. This is true for both knowledge and promotion. That is why one of the deciding factors was whether the chain has a culture and community to which our development team has access (i.e., it exists in Tokyo or Japan, etc.). Polygon had organized a hackathon in Japan, which was attended by about 300 people.

Addressing Concerns About Our Decision to Use Polygon

Q. Would users not be reluctant to pay the additional cost (gas fee) if the number of transactions is large?
A. We will develop and offer a system in which we bear all the gas fees as the NFT operator.

Q. Even if you sell on WETH, users will be asked to use MATIC once for new purchases on OpenSea. Would that not lead to increased dropout?
A. We plan on giving away MATIC to prospective buyers. This will remove the hassle of obtaining MATIC for users.

Q. Considering that much writing will take place in the blockchain and Polygon is not particularly fast at writing, would that not hinder operability?
A. We can not improve the speed of writing within the chain itself, but by improving the usability of our web app, we will try to find ways to create a user experience that feels faster to the users or makes waiting fun.
