XR Couture extends reality across the metaverse

Interoperability - a term we are becoming all too familiar with in the digital fashion space and beyond. NFT creators and collectors alike are asking the same question: What more can this digital drop do?

This is one of the core focus areas for digital wearables platform XR Couture. They’re all about extending reality (evident in their name) beyond just a pretty render sitting in your crypto wallet.

I’ve had my eye on them for a while; fell in love with the Cristal Trench by LUCII featured on XR Couture’s marketplace, as well as Ruffle Magic by Klaws. Besides the opportunity to own and wear these garments digitally, there was one distinct moment by XR Couture that truly showed me what they are all about.

Last year, they hosted a space in Spatial where they demonstrated their vision of interoperability across metaverses using two garments from their latest Meta Drip collection.

Avatars from a series of different metaverse platforms, including The Sandbox, ZEPETO, Decentraland and Roblox, were lined up side by side, wearing the same outfit but tailored to that specific platform's visual specifications and style.

Mesmerised, I had to learn more about the team behind XR Couture as well as their vision and mission for the future of fashion. I was fortunate enough to catch XR Couture frontman Subham Jain (who also happens to be an architect and creative entrepreneur) for this feature, who shared some insider knowledge about the inner workings of the platform.

A sustainable mission

During XR Couture's formative years, Subham had a vision. He wanted to find a sustainable way to reduce 50% of the annual waste produced by the fashion industry. A bold feat but, to Subham, not an impossible one. The way to do this was by harnessing the massive potential cutting-edge simulation technologies offered. And so, XR Couture was born.

The idea is to encapsulate all that fashion represents, as well as how it acts as a medium to carry and express our identities - our very essence as individuals - in a more eco-friendly manner.

“Fashion defines your identity in IRL and URL,” Subham explains. “It defines who you are in the virtual world. We envision a future where our avatars in the metaverse wear ornate and hyper-realistic fashion items that define our virtual identity. As virtual existence becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, it's not hard to imagine a reality where one's virtual persona holds more significance and value than their physical one.”

Power of utility

What sets XR Couture apart from other platforms selling digital fashion wearables is their acute attention to interoperability. They have managed to source top talent in 3D digital design, enabling them to extend the usability of digital fashion assets.

“Our team is capable of producing hyper-realistic fashion items, utilising their mastery of triangle count, be it high-poly or low-poly,” Subham says. “This versatility allows us to cater to a wide range of visual preferences and technical specifications, ensuring that our fashion assets can be carried seamlessly across multiple metaverse platforms.”

In true web3 style, XR Couture is open to collaboration and invites independent 3D creators and digital fashion designers to contribute to achieving the platform’s mission of interoperability across digital worlds. And the best part about creating and contributing in the digital fashion space? “No physical materials, factories, or staff are required - just a computer, a sprinkle of passion, drive, and some time,” Subham says.

XR Couture’s Meta Drip collection is all about interoperability, demonstrating how digital wearables are not only visually appealing but are extremely versatile for cross-platform use. Meta Drip is currently available on Decentraland and Snapchat with plans to extend to The Sandbox.

As a means to further empower the digital fashion community, XR Couture has launched a series of master classes where they invite both seasoned and aspiring digital fashion designers to upskill in the space. Sign up here to join.
