Solar dos Esmeraldos is a manor house located in Lombada, parish and municipality of Ponta do Sol.

This building was ordered built in 1494 by the wealthy Flemish merchant João Esmeraldo who allocated the land of Lombada da Ponta do Sol for the cultivation of sugar cane. Over time, it underwent improvement works, while maintaining its original style. Since 1931 it has been owned by the Portuguese State and is currently a school. In 1977, it was classified as a Property of Public Interest.

Description

Plan composed of several adjacent rectangular bodies, highlighted in the landscape due to their volume, and integrating a tower in the central body;
ground floor and two storey elevations, adapted to the uneven terrain. Articulated volumes with differentiated coverings in gabled roofs in the tower and four in the remaining bodies, covered in canudo tile with a Roman tile channel, topped by a simple eaves over a cornice painted in white. Main façade, facing N., with 3 bodies, with the main one, N.W., at the level of the first floor, a stonework portal in a round arch, topped by a cornice and coat of arms of the Emeralds carved in stone, and flanked by 2 barred sill windows;
on the second floor, 5 sash windows with a stonework frame. In the body of the tower, a small window on the 1st floor and three stonework openings on the 2nd floor, with quadrangular gargoyles on the sides. In the lower body, NE., a simple door and 3 sill windows with a stonework frame. On the west façade, which borders the old municipal path, at the level of the first, a door and a barred window;
then two symmetrically superimposed windows, the second floor having a sill with a shutter, and that of the 3rd of guillotine. On the façade facing south, this recessed body establishes the external connection between the various floors by a staircase with a profile of two flights and a balcony at the level of the first floor, which is directly connected to the main gate by an interior corridor, with a floor paved with pebbles. the region, and also gives access to other interior facilities through a stone portal finished in a cartouche with the date of 1780;
on the 1st floor, stone doors and wooden ridges give access to an outdoor patio paved with pebbles from the region. The advanced body has, on the first floor, doors with faceted jambs, on the 2nd floor, five sash windows, and on the upper floor, symmetrically arranged, bay windows with wrought-iron balconies and topped by a stonework cornice.
