The Old Monsanto Panoramic Restaurant existed in a building constructed for this purpose and located in Montes Claros, in Monsanto, Lisbon. Built in the Estado Novo, the building was designed by the architect Chaves Costa.

It is a circular building, with a radius of 16 meters, five floors and a 270-degree panoramic view.

After decades of abandonment, it was converted into a municipal viewpoint.

History

Initially the work was handed over to Francisco Keil do Amaral, an influential architect with several works in Lisbon. However, António Vitorino da França Borges, then Mayor of Lisbon, did not like Keil do Amaral's project and handed the work over to Chaves da Costa.

In 1964, the reinforced concrete structure began to be built and was completed in 1967. In terms of decoration, it received:

  • Ceramic panel by Manuela Madureira on "Figures and Scenes of the City of Lisbon" (often wrongly attributed to Querubim Lapa), in 1965.

  • Mural painting, by Luís Dourdil.

  • Tile panel with images of Lisbon before the 1755 earthquake by ceramist Manuela Ribeiro Soares.

  • Bas-relief in granite by sculptor Maria Teresa Quirino da Fonseca.

The project included a restaurant, with support services, a café terrace, viewpoint, banquet hall and several complementary facilities. The restaurant opened in 1970 but operates intermittently. It hosts sporadic events, hosting up to 600 people.

Before closing permanently in 2001, Restaurante Panorânico was a nightclub, a bingo hall, an office for a filming company and even a warehouse for construction materials. Neither business survived.
