In this square, until the century. XVI, the local administrative center, the fish market and, until 1774, the village pillory were installed.
It communicates with Avenida Luísa Todi through the Postigo da Ribeira, opened in the medieval wall.
On October 4, 1911, by municipal decision, it was unanimously approved “that the Largo da Ribeira Velha be given the name of Largo do Dr. Francisco Soveral”, in homage to the memory of Dr. Francisco Joaquim Aires do Soveral, who left his name linked to important charitable acts in this city.
The surrounding buildings present a symbolic language with an identity of the space itself. In one of the buildings there is the coat of arms of the Sardinha family.
