Why say "GM-GN" for community?
Draft

I have previously managed a Discord network, although I had no experience with Discord management or community management. I had to learn on the job, from setting up channels to permissions and bot configurations. To make our channel look as similar as possible to others, I joined various other community channels. (My boss advised that the best way to quickly develop skills at that time was to use copy & paste)

#gm-gn channel.

Many users join Discord primarily for airdrops. Teams create Discord servers to showcase or boast about the size of their communities to investors. Furthermore, they use Discord for various purposes such as communication, events, or collecting feedback from customers. However, as you may know, this does not constitute a true community. A true community ideally grows through healthy conversations. Important and non-important channels should be separated. Most channels have a GM-GN (Good Morning-Good Night) channel. Why is that necessary?

Many teams talk about the importance of community but don’t make clear efforts. If airdrops are involved, it’s not a true community. Reddit is a prime example of a model community. Users participate voluntarily, communicate freely about topics, and create their own culture.

Currently, I am part of over 100 Discord channels. After neglecting Discord for a while, I was surprised to see a multitude of notifications. Some teams consider user experience when creating Discord servers, while others do not care as much. For instance, some servers send an automatic welcome message to everyone who joins or use bots like Tweetshift or MEE6 to tag @everyone.

I hope a healthy community culture will also develop in the crypto world. Whether services like 'Discode/farecast/fren.tech will play a role in that is still uncertain. I believe community value comes from interest. Therefore, I once thought that trending memes or NFTs could be typical examples, but I hope communities will not absolutely depend on money.

In the era of short-form content like TikTok and Reels, explanations must be brief. Thus, creating a “narrative” is crucial in crypto. It’s not important to users what purpose protocols were created for or what workflows they have. I consider these as damaging to the community. We need to research and study more. Broadly speaking, if blockchain is a community, we should grow through stronger conversations rather than just GM-GN.
