Welcome to the Canto Namespace Protocol guide. This guide will walk you through the process of creating and claiming (minting) your own unique Canto Name.
Canto Namespace Protocol (CNP) is the first permissionless subprotocol for Canto Identity, a new protocol system designed to bring a broader & more meaningful interpretation to your onchain self-expression.
Unlike other naming protocols, CNP empowers users with self-expression by creating onchain display names using stylized letters, numbers, and emojis.
In order to design and claim a Canto name, you must first ensure that you have Canto and $NOTE in your wallet.
For help bridging funds to Canto, read the guide. Once bridged, funds can be used to purchase $NOTE or Canto on third-party DEX interfaces such as Slingshot.
Assuming you have $NOTE and Canto in your wallet, you are ready to begin!
To connect your wallet navigate to cantoname.build.
If this is your first time connecting to Canto Namespace, click "Connect Wallet" in the top right-hand corner of the interface and choose your preferred wallet option.
It’s important to highlight that you must connect the wallet you want to use to claim the Canto Name. Ownership of a Canto Name can be transferred to a different wallet address later using Canto’s NFT marketplace, Blank Rasa.
Additionally, ensure you have $NOTE and Canto in your wallet to pay the transaction fees in the next steps.
Minting Trays is how you get the different stylized characters used to design your name, with each tray containing 7 randomized letters, numbers, or emojis.
Currently, names must be between 8 and 13 characters in length. With that in mind, users will need to mint at least 2 trays in order to build an 8-character name (shorter names are coming in the future).
Once your wallet is connected, use the + or - buttons to select the number of trays you want to mint.
When you have decided on the number of trays you want to mint, click "Mint Trays.” A box from MetaMask will pop up, asking you to approve the spending cap (You will need to approve enough $NOTE to cover the cost of the trays). Once you’ve set the spending cap, click approve and confirm the transaction in your wallet.
Once the transaction is complete, you'll see your character trays within the Fuse Interface. To start building your name, simply click on the character tiles in the order you want.
As mentioned previously, users can mint names ranging from 8 and 13 characters in length. The character count is determined using the simplified ‘Base name,’ which includes only letters and numbers for searchability.
Select your tiles carefully; unused characters on selected trays will be burned. Need help finding a specific letter or a particular font? You can use the search bar and filter feature to help search within your character trays.
While creating your name, you’ll notice the display, base name, and fusing cost appearing below. The fusing cost will remain at zero until you have selected at least 8 characters, and then it adjusts based on your final character count.
Once you have created your desired name, click ‘Fuse’ to formally claim your name. You will need to ensure your $NOTE spending cap is set high enough to cover the fusing costs. MetaMask will pop up asking you to confirm the transaction in your wallet.
Here’s a breakdown of fusing pricing:
8 Letters: 64 NOTE
9 Letters: 32 NOTE
10 Letters: 16 NOTE
11 Letters: 8 NOTE
12 Letters: 1 NOTE
13 Letters: 1 NOTE
After the fusing process is complete, your name is officially claimed. Your ‘Names’ will display with your ID#, Display name, and Base name.
Congratulations on successfully claiming a Canto Name, the first piece of creating your onchain identity.
