Midgard Saga: A Medieval Styled Idle Card Game

Foreword

In August this year, the 3D idle card blockchain game Midgard Saga will be available for public beta testing. Under the story background of medieval legends, players can experience the rich and interesting story background while enjoying the thrill of completed gameplay and battle.

1. Overview

1.1 Project Introduction

Midgard Saga is a casual idle card game with strategies and roleplay elements. Prior to combat, players premake parties of heroes, matching them with corresponding attributes and gears. During combat, players will enjoy a well-woven storyline of a prince saving his country, with hands-free controls. Midgard Saga has rich strategic elements, with more than 3,000 combos of heroes, skills, and gears, bringing players the freedom of exploration. The game has six unique systems of hero development, allowing players to fully customize their preferences and ultimately build up their strong lineups.

Midgard Saga is a blockchain-based game, presenting an exclusive economic system of Void NFT assets. It has a highly deflationary mechanism - players own Void NFTs which help them minmax the attributes in the game. Players could also expect a high return from the Void NFTs by trading them in secondary markets.

1.2 Team Background

Midgard Saga is developed and published by IOA Studio, which was established in 2011. IOA is a high-quality game development studio with a high reputation among players. The team has more than 30 outstanding game developers. Their self-developed and published games include Battle City, Mini Battlegrounds, Fortress and other excellent products. It has cooperated with the well-known Korean game company JoyCity to develop games such as Flying Airplane, Sea Roger Crowley, World of Tanks, which have also received positive feedbacks from players.

Midgard Saga is the first attempt by IOA studio in an Anime 3D strategy card battle game. IOA Studio has always been committed to creating innovative gameplay as its goal, and hopes that more players can experience the joy of exploring the core gameplays.

2. Game Content

2.1 Story settings

The story of Midgard Saga takes place on the mighty continent of Midgard.

In the year 1600 of the Miral calendar, the capital of Midgard was in turmoil. Hodr, King of Obsidom, seized the throne with the assistance of the Vanier Empire, and Sage Emperor Crowe was secretly killed. Fortunately, the High Priest Brin saved Princess Lina, who was Crowe's adopted daughter, and the royal son Forseti passed by the disaster because he was on an expedition in the trading city of Eaton.

The world is unpredictable, just when King Hodr thought he had a sure victory, the Vanier Empire unexpectedly turned against him and attacked Midgard. The chaotic situation gives Forseti the opportunity to fight back with the support of the former king's guards and the knights!

And our story will start from here…

2.2 Game Modes

There are two major game modes in Midgard Saga: The Main Story Campaign (Challenge Mode) and PVP

The Challenge Mode

There are 27 chapters in the main story, and each chapter has multiple levels. As players progress, the difficulty of the levels will increase, alongside a better loot. Players will unlock new content of the gameplay, such as Marketplace, Guilds, Arenas, and Relics, through completing some of the levels.

Rules

The number of daily challenges is limited. Kill all enemies within a given time to pass the level and get the loot. Players can clear a level repeatedly by spending the chances of challenges which will be unlocked after passing the level for the first time.

NPCs

In each dungeon combat, there will be one NPC joining players. The levels and qualities of the NPCs are fixed. NPCs are not transferable.

The Abyssal Dungeon

The Abyssal Dungeon activates daily. It is composed of multi-layered map levels, and the enemy level increases as players go deeper. Meanwhile, players will need to select the enemy's special effect on each layer and push through maps. The more special effects selected, the more difficult the map of the layer will be, along with higher points and a better loot reward. Be reminded that the effects selected in each layer will be retained to the next layer.
Players can mine Relic Shards and Minerals on the surface of the Abyssal Dungeon (Minerals are a required material when recovering a Relic) The hourly mining rewards are determined by players’ progressions in the main story. The further progression players have made, the higher rewards they will get.

The Celestial Trial

There are three rooms on each level of the Celestial Trial. Players will select one of the three rooms to challenge. There are specific rooms that require heroes of certain factions or classes. After finishing a level, players can enter the next level. After clearing the highest level, players will return to the first level and continue to challenge the remaining rooms until all rooms are challenged. Each time the highest level is cleared, the attributes of the enemies in the spire enhance.

After clearing the highest level, players will be rewarded with Relics that are exclusive to the Celestial Trial.

Hunter's Crusade

There are three bosses in Hunter's Crusade. The bosses will appear in a daily rotation. A successful hunt will be rewarded with Gold and gears of the highest rarity. On Saturdays and Sundays, challenge bosses will be available. Hunter's Crusade Rank will record the total damage caused by each player in the boss challenges, and rewards will be distributed according to the ranks.

PVP

There are two PVP modes, the Arena and Royal Clash

Arena

Arenas are PVP battles between two players. A player will premake a squad of four heroes to battle against the other player. Participating in the Arena will consume a Challenge Coupon, which can be acquired through daily quests, or through purchases in the Weekly Event Shop or the Marketplace.

Ranks

There are four ranks in the Arena: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Diamond. Players who pass the main story Chapter 3 Round 20, Chapter 7 Round 60, Chapter 8 Round 60, Chapter 9 Round 60, and place top 10 in their current ranks, can upgrade their ranks to the next, or will automatically enter the Arena for a higher rank at the beginning of the next season.

Leaderboard

Players will be given points for victories in the Arena. The higher points you and your opponent have, the higher points you will be rewarded for winning. There will be no penalty for losing an Arena battle, but points will be reset to zero at the end of each season. Ranks are determined by the seasonal points, and the leaderboard of each rank will be calculated individually. Rewards Players will be rewarded with rare Arena Coins according to their final ranks. Arena Coins can be used to purchase new heroes in the Arena Shop.

Royal Clash

Royal Clash is a 3 vs 3 wheel battle. Two players will pre-make 3 squads to battle with the opponent. If a squad gets wiped out, the next squad will be battling, until the last squad is dead. Royal Clash uses the ranking swap system: a player can only challenge another player of higher ranks. The winner will take the higher rank and the loser will take the lower rank.

Players will be rewarded with rare Royal Coins according to their final ranks. Royal Coins can be used to purchase new heroes in the Royal Shop. Besides, there will be seasonal rewards given according to the final rankings.

2.3 Introduction to NFT Asset System

Midgard Saga aims to build a connection between Web2 and Web3 players, hence presenting a unique economy of Void Assets. Players own their in-game assets as tokens on the blockchain. There are three types of rare NFTs which can be traded in secondary markets: Void Hero NFTs, Void Gear NFTs, Void Hero Shard NFTs.

Void Heroes

The total supply of Void Heroes is 3600, distributed evenly into 3 categories: Zing, Cyn, Isylia.

When Void Heroes are bound to heroes in the game, attributes and combat power will be buffed up greatly. Sacrificing the existing Void Hero NFTs will produce Void Hero NFTs of higher quality.

It’s worth noticing that Void Hero NFTs will not be dropped in the game.

Void Gears

There are four slots of Void Gears, Helmets, Weapons, Armors, and Boots. The total supply is 5400, distributed evenly to three types of Void Heros.

Void Gears can not be upgraded, but evolve with Void Heroes, bringing huge buffs in attributes. Just like Void Heroes, Void Gears will not be dropped in the game.

Void Hero Shard NFTs

The total supply of Void Hero Shards is 2997. Shards can be synthesized into a complete Void Hero. Each Void Hero is composed of three Shards, with a total supply of 999 heroes. Unlike the other two types, Void Hero Shards can be acquired in-game. Void Hero Shards are a gift to active players who are highly involved with the game. Shard A is acquired through participating in community events in the early stage of game development. Shard B is acquired with RNG: every nine Mystery Boxes opened, one Shard B is guaranteed. Shard C is acquired through completing Chapter One of the main story.

The Unique Deflationary Mechanism

The development team of Midgard Saga has presented the unique deflationary mechanism for the on-chain assets in the game to form a reasonable and stable in-game economic system.

The economy of Void Assets is highly deflationary

  1. Void Hero NFTs are capable of Pact Merge. Sacrificing the existing Void Hero NFTs will produce Void Hero NFTs of higher quality.
  2. Void Hero Shards can be merged into a complete Void Hero NFT. At the same time, hen Void Heroes and Void Gears are bound to heroes in the game, attributes and combat power will be buffed up greatly. Players will earn high profits from trading Void Assets.

Allocation

The development team will reserve 10% of the total 900 mystery boxes as rewards for subsequent operation activities; the rest of the mystery boxes will be used for whitelists and public sale.

3.2 Marketplace

  • NFT assets in Midgard Saga can be traded in the Marketplace of YeehaGames, a new GameFi platform that serves as the largest distribution platform for GameFi globally. It targets a market of 3 billion users across traditional and crypto player communities. Players can enjoy the games on the platform, as well as mint items, showcase, trade, and auction NFTs.

4. Expectations on Game Development Based on the Status Quo of GameFi and Traditional Game Market Segments

At present, games are not only an entertainment for players. Players invest a lot of time and money in different games while enjoying the entertainment and social attributes brought by games. However, the traditional game with a huge player base has a fatal flaw, that is, the player's ownership of in-game items is not completely in their own hands, but is controlled by the development team. And the virtual world built by traditional games does not have a complete and outwardly expanding economic system to build a connection with the physical world.

Blockchain games solve this problem to a certain extent. For example, the unique NFT economic system in Midgard Saga enables the NFTs that players pay to buy to be tradable and circulated as a medium to open up the internal and external economic system of the game. It truly makes the connection between the players and Midgard Saga closer. If players can allocate their own NFT assets in a reasonable investment logic in the game, they will be able to sell NFTs while enjoying the game content, and achieve the game experience of Play and Earn.

Of course, for the current popular blockchain games on the market, it has become a problem that users pay too much attention to the money-making effect of the game but ignore the quality of the game itself. Many blockchain games have developed seemingly reasonable economic systems, that the main attraction for players is "making money" rather than "enjoying the game". With the continuous inflow of players who want to make money, the in-game gold farming return will also decrease. Players will soon be exhausted by the simple Play-to-Earn model and boring gameplay. The phenomenon that GameFi rises fast but dies faster just goes against the original intention of the concept of "game".

Through Midgard Saga's introduction of the NFT deflationary mechanism, we can really feel the development team's cautiousness towards the economic model and the promising future development of the project itself.

What makes Midgard Saga different from GameFi products is that the development team did not think about releasing a large number of NFTs and making a big money from selling them at the beginning of the project. Instead, they tried their best to avoid the proliferation of NFTs in the game, which would potentially ruin the balance of the game, and to avoid poor user experience, which will finally lead to user loss and declined game experience.

At the same time, as a blockchain game, Midgard Saga has paid attention to the gameplay quality and experience from the beginning. The richness in the game’s story background, game modes and smooth operation system are designed to bring both blockchain game enthusiasts and traditional game lovers. To provide a better game experience, Midgard Saga lets blockchain game users experience the joy of farming gold in high-quality gameplay without any worries, and let traditional game users experience the charm of the combination of economy and high-quality games on-chain smoother. This performance will finally bring the real connection and integration between Web 2 and Web 3.
