NFTs: A Gamer’s Journey - Part 3

Hi NFT-game designers, I’m a gamer. NFTs are not my thing. But hey, they’re getting more popular. So I decided to give it a shot and try myself at NFT gaming.

But my little experiment raised many questions. So I decided to write about my journey, hoping you could find in it useful info to help you onboard other traditional gamers like me.

I broke down my NFT gaming journey into 5 challenges. May they inspire you.

Challenge #3: “OK, & now…how can I get those NFTs you’re talking about?”

I’m a gamer. I want to play games. I’m not here to become a Web3 blockchain master.

So my point really is to encourage game creators to find a balance for their NFTs, between utility and accessibility.

If an NFT is difficult to acquire (create a wallet, add a network, buy tokens on an exchange to fund it bla bla bla)… I’ll just be discouraged and left behind.

Web3 should be so easy!
Web3 should be so easy!

So…

NFTs and crypto may become part of all our lives.

And I realize that comes with new constraints — like needing to create a crypto wallet, securing transactions and so on…

But can you find us solutions to alleviate them?

Take a game like Big Time, a cooperative MMORPG where players form parties to fight battles through time and space. They implemented a feature where you can buy NFTs using a credit card. That makes the NFTs very accessible for me.

Illuvium is an open-world game in which you can capture creatures/NFTs, collect them and send them to battle on auto-battler gameplay. I’d still have to create my wallet and such but… at least I can easily enter this new world of NFTs, and start to build my NFT collection by playing.

And the same is the case for games like Gods Unchained or Splinterlands (collecting, trading and fighting card games) that allow you to start with free cards, then win tokens with them to buy NFTs.

The key is to enable a player to enter the game in an easy manner, discover it and start to like it.

Because once you’ve onboarded non-NFT gamers, the easier it is for them to acquire NFTs… the faster you’ll turn them into NFT gamers!

Continue the journey in Challenge #4: “OK, I’ve started to play but… isn’t that NFT community turning into a cult/scam/lair of traders?”

Web3 has a lot of value to offer the individual gamer.

As an NFT game creator, you have the chance not just to influence a gamer’s in-game journey, but his/her IRL journey too — in learning about Web3, NFTs and the blockchain, and reflecting on ownership and asset management.

As a passionate gamer, I hope you’ll seize this opportunity.

And if you do…

I can’t wait to experience your game.
