The Queen of sacrifice

"When Fedetic first appears in the story, it's the power of this fear," explains lead narrative writer Jared "Carnival Rider" Rosen. "This is a character who specifically stalks Akari, but it also seeps into the dreams of other star guardians. Fedetick is like a hunter, slowly tracking its prey closer and closer, and none of the Star Guardians can figure out why or what connection." The guardians watch helplessly as Akari begins to obsess over her painful past and alienate herself from others. Akari's pain comes from her childhood friend, the former guardian of the Stars, Hap, who has become the brainless beast Fedetic in the chaotic dimension. Harp was the first Star Guardian to fall, leaving her familiar Geist, trapped in a cage in the center of Fiddle's body.

Fedetic design philosophy

"We wanted Fiddle to have some kind of connection with Zoe," says Oscar "Gay Lil Frog" Vega, concept lead and Star Guardian artistic director. "So we started thinking about what Harp would do to Zoe before she fell. There's an idea that maybe Harp plays music for Zoe - or maybe she likes to read her books. Then we settled on the chess theme."

"We thought chess was good because both Zoe's and Fidel's play styles were very tactical," Oscar went on to explain. "With Fiddle, you can position your portrait and try to find your best Angle, whereas with Zoe, you're doing all this math and geometry to hit someone. So we think it's true for both characters." So the subtle elements of the Star Guardian that Harp and Zoe used to play chess with are evident in the details of the skin.

 "I took the chess theme and tried to explore different versions with different pieces, mainly pawns and horses," Whiteleyth said. "In addition, when designing the lantern, I tried to add a subtle background hint inside the lantern, and added a small star to the broken lantern, implying that it used to be a star guardian." What a subtle design!

Even Fiddle's visuals have been influenced by Harp's love of chess. As it slaps opponents on the battlefield with its harvest and Raven Storm abilities, the landscape around Fidel's targets becomes a warped and eerie chessboard in a field of chaos.
