Mr. Shang Yusheng died of illness on July 15, 2020 at the age of 81. During his lifetime, he has been committed to promoting the construction of China’s public welfare community and is known as “a veteran and meritorious figure for the innovative development of public welfare philanthropy in contemporary China”. Whether it is to lead the construction of China’s earliest foundation joint platform “China Science Foundation Research Foundation”, actively participate in China’s earliest private foundation experience exchange and seminar “Chengde conference” and “Xiangshan conference”, or jointly launch and lead the “China Foundation and NPO information network” (later Beijing enjiu information consulting center and the predecessor of the Foundation Center Network), and promote the “China NPO self-discipline action”, Committed to promoting the information exchange and credibility construction of China’s public welfare and charity organizations, he has been working hard to promote the overall development and improvement of China’s public welfare and charity industry, and then looks forward to promoting the overall improvement of Chinese society.

The commemorative short film “Shang Yusheng, the elder of public welfare: he has gone, but de Naixing” is produced by the foundation central network. It reviews Mr. Shang Yusheng’s life, public welfare spirit and innovative exploration in the form of a short video. The commemorative short film specially shows two notes written by Mr. Shang Yusheng during his lifetime. One of them is about the future of China’s public welfare. He wrote: “China’s third sector must develop and can develop - like most countries in the world, the third sector will occupy the mainstream position and play a mainstream role in social development. There is no doubt!” Another paragraph reflects his soberness and determination. He wrote: “the development of NPO is a process, and it is a long-term process, which takes’ generation after generation ‘as the time period. This is also the difficulty of NPO career. How should we prepare? My conclusion is to be patient.”
Shangyusheng Memorial Collection
The collection of Shang Yusheng’s commemorative works is funded by Mr. He Daofeng, selected and edited by the charity culture foundation of the ED Foundation (for short, the ED Foundation), and published by the Social Science Literature Publishing House. According to the overall idea of “listening to his words, observing his deeds, and seeing him”, the commemorative anthology is divided into three parts: the first part is a total of 24 articles, speeches and letters written by Mr. Shang Yusheng during his lifetime, and includes two important documents drafted / led by Mr. Shang Yusheng during his lifetime, the credibility standard of China’s non-profit organizations (NPO) and the self-discipline code of China’s public welfare non-profit organizations (Draft), And two interview manuscripts of Chinese philanthropist magazine as appendix; The second edition is a total of 11 articles mourning Mr. Shang Yusheng’s family, friends and colleagues after his death, and includes two appendices: the full record of Mr. Shang Yusheng’s 2020 online memorial meeting and more (written) commemorations of Mr. Shang Yusheng; Mr. Yusheng’s biography and Mr. philanthropist’s biography are the two covers of Mr. Yusheng and Mr. philanthropist. According to the introduction of ED Chuanyi foundation, although these contents can not restore the whole history and times of Mr. Shang Yusheng and his experience, they are all valuable materials left by Mr. Shang Yusheng to China’s public welfare industry or generated through Mr. Shang Yusheng. I hope this commemorative collection can become an entrance to continue to guide more later generations to pursue Mr. Shang Yusheng’s spiritual realm and unfinished business.

“Soft heart, soft feelings, not soft bones, self-improvement, self-discipline and future generations -- Memorial Exhibition of Shang Yusheng, a public welfare veteran”
“Soft heart and soft feelings, not soft bones, self-improvement and self-discipline, and future generations -- Memorial Exhibition of public welfare veteran Shang Yusheng” was planned by evergreen library and supported by the Beijing Representative Office of Ford Foundation (USA). Evergreen library was initiated by the China Foundation Development Forum, which aims to record, inherit and disseminate Chinese folk public welfare. According to Changqing library, after Mr. Shang Yusheng died, his family generously donated more than 1000 historical archives retained by Mr. Shang Yusheng to Changqing library. This commemorative exhibition featured more than 100 documents, photos, letters, manuscripts and books. In addition to reviewing Mr. Shang Yusheng’s thoughts and actions in exploring the development of China’s public welfare and charity industry, we also hope to present the development process of China’s public welfare and charity industry in the past 20 years before and after the turn of the century.

Representatives of Mr. Shang Yusheng’s family, evergreen library and Ford Foundation (USA) Beijing Representative Office spoke respectively. Among them, Ms. Xiao Hui, a representative of Mr. Shang Yusheng’s family and widow, said in her speech that their family agreed that donating Mr. Shang Yusheng’s archives related to public charity as a public historical material of China’s public charity industry is the best way to commemorate and inherit Mr. Shang Yusheng’s career and spirit, and it is in line with Mr. Shang Yusheng’s wishes. As the representative of evergreen library, Tan Hongbo, Deputy Secretary General of China Foundation Development Forum, expressed his admiration for the noble feelings of Mr. Shang Yusheng’s family in supporting the construction of the industry.
