Three first aid tips for children with high incidence of burns and scalds in summer
May 3rd, 2022

Summer is the season of high incidence of burns and scalds, and children are the people with high incidence of burns and scalds. Pediatricians suggest that if a child accidentally burns, there are three first-aid tips to remember.

One is to get rid of the heat source. Under the condition of ensuring their own safety, people around them should quickly take measures to help the children take off or cut off their clothes, remove the hot porridge on the skin, and remove the wires, so as to reduce the continuous heat damage. Wang Quan, director of the emergency department of the National Children’s medical center and Beijing Children’s Hospital, reminded not to tear off clothes by force, let alone puncture or tear off the blister skin at will.

Second, wash with cold water. The correct approach is to immediately wash the burn wound with cold water for more than 30 minutes. Zhu Linsheng, a general surgeon at Shunyi women’s and children’s Hospital of Beijing Children’s Hospital, stressed that we must not superstitiously apply soy sauce and toothpaste on folk prescriptions to avoid secondary injury to children.

Third, timely medical treatment. Zhu Linsheng said that because children’s skin tissue structure has not been fully developed, under the same heat source, children’s burns are often more serious than adults. Therefore, children with burns and scalds should seek medical treatment in time. In principle, the nearest regular hospital should be selected for emergency treatment to avoid delaying the time of treatment, resulting in dehydration, infection and even shock and death.

According to statistics, burns and scalds rank second among the causes of hospitalized accidental injuries in children. Zhu Linsheng suggested that children’s probability of burning and scalding indoors is significantly higher than that in the outdoor environment. The dining room, kitchen, washroom and living room in the family are high-risk areas. About 75% of burns and scalds occur in infants aged 0 to 3 years and 15% in preschool children aged 3 to 7 years. Children’s guardians should pay special attention to the management of family heat sources, do a good job in relevant knowledge education for preschool children, and learn to correctly deal with children’s burn accidents to avoid secondary injury.
