5 Ways to Amplify Women's Presence in the Metaverse
February 20th, 2023

According to the 2022 report "What Women Want in Web3" by The Female Quotient and EWG Unlimited, 75% of women are aware of the metaverse, but only 30% know how to use it to their advantage. This could pose a significant problem regarding increasing women's presence in the Web3 sphere in the coming year. Combined with the fact that male interests continue to dominate the metaverse as they lead in creation and purchasing power, women have a real risk of being sidelined regarding having a say in metaverse development.

To ensure equitable growth for all in the future of Web3 and the metaverse, we must prioritise women's influence and leadership. Here are five ways to do so.

Accessibility is vital

The decentralized nature of the metaverse and Web3 often makes it intimidating and difficult for the wider world to understand, which can lead to complete avoidance of the space altogether. To break down these barriers, we must prioritize education and upskilling for women through events, podcasts, social media, and community-building. By doing so, we can successfully amplify women's voices in the metaverse, by highlighting how the space truly has something for everyone.

Fun & engagement

Making the metaverse a fun, engaging space to be in is crucial in attracting women. This is why we created Fashion League, an immersive and community-driven Web3 mobile game with low entry barriers. In this game, players have the ability to create their very own fashion empires, and by prioritizing the importance of having fun we help to remove the focus away from Web3 being a daunting space. By empowering all players to build a community and benefit from their time spent and skills acquired while honing their metaverse skills, women can learn just how thrilling the Web3 sphere can be.

NFTs as a gateway

NFTs are a more accessible and easier-to-understand concept than other Web3 topics, and can have a genuine utility that can cross over into real life. More than just being digital collectibles, NFTs can grant holders immediate unique and special benefits on top of their accrued value over time, such as membership perks, exclusive real-world or metaverse experiences and access to premium content. Women-centered Web3 groups have primarily focused on NFTs for this reason, making it an excellent entry point for non-native Web3 brands looking to cater to a female audience. This needs to be better focused upon to attract more women into the metaverse.

Aesthetics play an important role too

The previously highlighted report indicates that aesthetics play a critical role in retaining women's interest in the metaverse. However, due to a lack of female representation, male biases dominate. Consequently, it is essential that brands must seriously consider aesthetics relevant to women to drive engagement.

Connection is key

Connection is critical in encouraging women's involvement, as 43% of women are ready to participate if given the opportunity to connect and socialize. Projects must focus on building interpersonal connections within their community-building strategy to incentivize engagement.

In conclusion, to onboard more women into the metaverse, we need to merge the physical and digital realms and meet women where they are. By focusing on accessibility, NFTs, aesthetics, connection, and fun, we can create a metaverse that genuinely represents and empowers women.
