2023 was the year of developer onboarding and community building for Scroll_ZKP. As we open the door to 2024, we want to take a moment to reflect on some of our greatest achievements over the past year.
On October 18th, 2023, we achieved our biggest milestone to date with the official launch of Scroll_ZKP on Ethereum Mainnet. From day one, the Scroll zkEVM has been fully open to developers and users as part of our commitment to a credibly-neutral and fair launch.
Scroll was founded by a collective of passionate Ethereum enthusiasts and open-source contributors with the goal of scaling Ethereum through zero-knowledge cryptography. Over the past year, we've focused on community building, encouraging developers to express their creativity through experimentation on Scroll.
With security being our top priority, we battle-tested Scroll over three consecutive testnets, which included a rigorous auditing period. Internally, we operate both blue and red security teams dedicated to uncovering potential vulnerabilities.
Additionally, we engaged four security audit firms for comprehensive external audits. Our bridge and rollup contracts were thoroughly audited by OpenZeppelin and zellic_io, while our zkEVM circuits were reviewed by trailofbits, zellic_io, and kalos_security.
Throughout this period of testing, Scroll processed:
Since Scroll_ZKP's mainnet launch, we have seen immense growth across the board. Over the past 75 days alone:
On October 27th, we launched Scroll Origins. This was our first community initiative to reward builders who have supported Scroll since the very beginning. To commemorate our launch, we unveiled Scroll Origins, an NFT mint to celebrate our earliest builders who have been a part of our journey from the beginning.
For Scroll, our Ethereum-aligned values have guided our decisions to be open-source, community-driven, and credibly neutral from day one. We want to grow our community organically, creating equal opportunities for everyone to build, learn, and grow in Web3. The NFT will be soulbound (non-transferable), and you can select which account you would like the NFT minted to when it is available to be claimed.
The metadata included in the NFT consists of:
More than 1.1M unique wallet addresses became eligible for our drop after deploying a smart contract on Scroll Mainnet.
Scroll Origins is not just any ordinary NFT, but a soulbound embodiment of Scroll's core values, equipped with a variety of special attributes that are unique to you.
Scroll Origins is split across the following categories: Quintic, Quartic, and Cubic. The category that you are eligible for depends on the time in which you deployed your smart contract.
Throughout the year, we attended numerous events around the world, including EthereumDenver, EthCC, Permission. Our design team prepared unique and colourful patterns for protocols with the highest levels of activity across the Scroll_ZKP ecosystem. We encouraged our community to show us their designs by publishing on X alongside the tag @Scroll_ZKP and @BuildWithScroll.
Just before the holiday break, we announced the deployment of Uniswap V3 on Scroll_ZKP Mainnet. Thanks to multiple community-built frontends, anyone can now use Uniswap to execute affordable and high-speed token swaps. Scroll's Uniswap vote had a huge turnout, with 52M+ votes in support of the proposal!
Notably, through voting and support from hvaxDAO, Scroll is officially the first protocol supported through public-access, community-governed metagovernance! First, you will be able to access Uniswap v3 through okutrade, an advanced frontend with features designed for professional crypto trading—developed by @labsGFX, a grantee of the Uniswap Foundation.
Second, Uniswap frontend support has also been added to DapDapMeUp—a universal gateway to Layer 2 DeFi applications—with an easy-to-use interface. Lastly, you can use ApertureFinance's intent-based architectures to set up automated rebalances and position closures based on price, asset ratio, and time, making LP management easier on Uniswap v3.
To enhance the security and usability of stablecoins for users on @Scroll_ZKP, we integrated circles's latest Bridged USDC Standard. This upgrade improves the composability of USDC on Scroll, reducing the effects of liquidity fragmentation. This new contract standard introduces a significant composability upgrade that enhances user security and removes liquidity fragmentation for USDC on Scroll.
Typically, bridged USDC created by a third party is backed by native USDC that is locked in a smart contract on another blockchain. While this allows a blockchain to bootstrap liquidity at an early stage, it fragments liquidity and introduces additional smart contract risk.
Circle's new Bridged USDC Standard introduces a new specification that allows circle to deploy a bridged form of USDC on Scroll while retaining the optionality to upgrade the bridged USDC contract to native USDC issuance at any time.
Native USDC introduces many advantages over bridged USDC, such as:
The benefits that are obtained by upgrading to @circle's new standard will significantly benefit the Scroll_ZKP community by adding an extra layer of security and improving UX through the removal of liquidity fragmentation.
We were proud to welcome Chainlink to the Scroll_ZKP community. By bringing Chainlink's Oracle network to Scroll, our community of ecosystem builders have access to industry-leading data feeds.
Scroll developers now have access to the high-quality, accurate, and decentralized data needed to build secure, scalable, and advanced applications. Data feeds underpin lending/borrowing, stablecoins, and more in the on-chain economy because they provide:
This integration with Chainlink significantly enhances the capabilities of our developers and contributes to the growth and success of the Scroll_ZKP community. We look forward to seeing the innovative applications that will be built with these robust data feeds.
Last, but not least, we published our research article on Ethereum's next major upgrade, EIP-4844. EIP-4844 is set to drastically reduce rollup fees for users, and is a necessary prerequisite for Ethereum's journey towards full danksharding. We look forward to the exciting developments this upgrade will bring to the Ethereum community.
As we reflect on the past year, Scroll_ZKP stands at the forefront of innovation, community building, and technological advancement. Our journey has been guided by Ethereum-aligned values, with a focus on openness, community-driven development, and neutrality. As we enter 2024, the Scroll community looks forward to further scaling Ethereum through cutting-edge solutions and inclusive opportunities for all. Stay tuned for the exciting developments that lie ahead on the Scroll_ZKP Mainnet! 📜🚀
