Turkey's first university blockchain club, ITUBlockchain, was established on behalf of Istanbul Technical University, one of the most important technical universities in Turkey. ITUBlockchain, a pioneering club in the popularization of blockchain in Turkey, was founded by dYdX Turkey Country Leader Doruk İşmen and handed over to the next generation of university students.
University clubs play a vital role in fostering the growth of the blockchain ecosystem by disseminating the resources they create with their members and the wider community. As mentioned, Turkey stands out as one of the most active countries in the realm of crypto and blockchain, with a keen interest that goes beyond mere market movements. The local community consists of university clubs, Web3 startups, blockchain developers, academics, and investors.
In a country where blockchain activity flourishes across all sectors, one of the primary goals of those involved is to bring Ethereum DevCon, considered to be one of the most significant events in the sector since 2014, to Turkey. To achieve this, a campaign was started aimed at organizing the DevCon in Turkey. University Blockchain Clubs stand out as major contributors among the numerous industry experts supporting the campaign. Students have been actively involved in the initiative by organizing Ethereum events, sharing their efforts on Twitter, communicating with relevant individuals in hackathons, adding #DevconIstanbul to their Twitter names, and more, all with the goal of bringing Devcon to Turkey. The efforts of the blockchain clubs have paid off, and ETHIstanbul is set to take place in Turkey in November 2023. The visibility and eagerness of the university clubs played a significant role in this achievement.
After gaining knowledge and experience through learning, creating, and hacking, many students in blockchain clubs have taken the initiative to build their own blockchain projects. Some students evolving in the blockchain clubs have joined various communities to support the ecosystem's development. With collaborations, these communities can share their knowledge, network, and resources to advance their understanding of blockchain technology and its applications.
Dogan Alpaslan from Istanbul University and Ulaş Erdogan, Tahir Ozpala & Hamza Karabag from ITUBlockchain Club presented their blockchain project, Opclave. Opclave is an improvement on the OP Stack that features ERC-4337 compatible SC accounts and uses signatures that are abstracted with AppleEnclave. This innovation allows users to create and utilize non-custodial wallets with touch/face IDs, eliminating the need for seed phrases. The project has already generated significant interest.
One thriving community worth mentioning is the H.E.R. DAO Türkiye, which is devoted to nurturing and empowering Turkish women in the web3 ecosystem. As part of its mission, the H.E.R. DAO Türkiye was founded with the participation of several female members from University Blockchain Clubs. LaykaDAO is another organization that has benefited greatly from the support of blockchain clubs. They have played a crucial role in LaykaDAO's growth. LaykaDAO is a leading community that is committed to advancing the Turkish blockchain ecosystem through various products, including publishing insightful Medium articles, maintaining an extensive Web3 library, and releasing weekly journals to keep its members informed.
