Local Chess Club - Week 1

It has been almost a week since the start of the Local Chess Club!

We officially now have 8 members in our Discord, beating my expectation for the week. This was due to the indirect help from Pieter Levels, who just happened to be looking to promote small projects like this on Twitter. His response to my tweet drove a few hundred people to my initial Mirror post. A nice boost.

A few updates:

  1. White Opening - London
  2. Black Opening - King's Indian Defense
  3. End Games

These learning guides are a curated list of videos for each topic, ranging from beginner overviews to grandmaster model games. There is a ton of high quality chess videos out there available for free. Building out more learning guides and improving the quality of them will be a place where I will be spending most of my time.

For the upcoming week, there are few things I am hoping to accomplish. First off, I want people to start playing games with each other online. I have created a #looking-for-game channel in the discord. Does someone want to challenge me for the first game in club history? Once we have enough members, it would be fun to do a blitz arena as a first event.

I also need to strategize on how to find new members. It can be awkward joining a Discord channel with no activity, so getting more people through the door will be a challenge. If you know of anyone who is into chess or wants to learn, please send them this way.

That’s it for this update. Please enjoy this amazing video of Alireza Firouzja playing chess. He is only 18 and third highest ranked player in world.
