2、What is CESS?
Cumulus Encrypted Storage System (CESS) is a blockchain based decentralized cloud data network, built with Substrate open-source framework. CESS aims to establish the first decentralized storage project that supports large-scale commercial applications. The whole project mainly has three modules.
(1)Data Storage and Discovery Layer: The cloud-based data storage management layer provides complete data services: data preprocessing (copy + redundancy + slicing + encryption, etc.), data storage, data retrieval (node discovery + caching + indexing, etc.), and data display. This robust layer allows CESS to achieve its ultimate goal of providing data services for commercial uses at a large scale, which outperforms IPFS.
(2)Blockchain Layer: It is a Substrate-based decentralized blockchain layer with high performance, high scalability and innovative consensus.
(3)Application Layer: The powerful and full-featured application layer includes a complete API interface and a smart contract platform (WASM+EVM) on which DApps can be launched directly to handle high-volume data transactions and processing. The usability and easy integration to our management layer and smart contract platform encourage commercial users of any size to join. This is a layer neither IPFS(+FIL) or any other decentralized storage protocol offers good functionality.
3、Can you introduce your team Members to us?
The background of our team members includes but is not limited to cloud computing and storage, involved in cloud-related PaaS and SaaS products research and development; unique insights into the network development, cryptography algorithm implementation, and performance optimization; comprehensive knowledge of public chain and played a major role in the development of public chain focusing on the delivery of commercial applications. The members are working in the UK, US, China and India locations with the commitment to create a decentralized cloud storage data network for commercial use.

4、Why is CESS valuable compare to others?
None of the decentralized storage projects currently can support large-scale and high-volume commercial applications very well. CESS has firmly chosen the decentralized commercial storage track from day one. CESS firmly believes succeeding in the decentralized commercial storage track will provide CESS more commercial opportunities, generate a stronger cash flow, and gain more profitable monetization opportunities comparing to the projects in permanent storage track (i.e. ARWEAVE, SubSpace). CESS achieves data security and high availability, data privacy is protected, multiple types of data are authenticated, lower cost, fast and concurrent transactions, open and fair participation, high performance and efficient trusted data storage.
6、What is CESS’s consensus mechanism ?
CESS’s consensus mechanism (R²S) focuses on admission, verification, rotation, punishment, and quitting. The node becomes a candidate consensus node by staking a certain number of tokens; CESS system randomly selects 11 consensus nodes from many candidate consensus nodes during any given time window; the consensus nodes on-duty use the Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus algorithm to package transactions and produce blocks; at the same time, a reasonable reward and punishment mechanism encourages consensus nodes on duty to contribute in the network. Consensus nodes do not contribute to storage computing power. The participation of consensus nodes is always fair, preventing the nework being manipulated by supernodes, achieving low gas costs, fast transaction processing throughput (10,000TPS) and consensus security.
7、Why should the project choose Substrate?
First of all, Substrate’s technical framework is outstanding, and it is very friendly to CESS — — an application-based blockchain.CESS can use many tools that have been developed directly for the development of CESS, which is very friendly to the performance and functional support of the CESS public chain.

8、When did CESS join the Web3/Polkadot ecosystem and what impact will it have?
We’ve joined Polkadot ecology and obtained Poka ecology W3Fgrant (wave11) in October 2021.The first and second milestones have been delivered and passed, the 3rd milestone has been completed, and the application has been submitted and is awaiting approval.
We’ve submitted the Substrate Builders Program interview and we are confident that we will pass. The passing of this program can be a great endorsement and verification of our blockchain technology development capability.

10、How does CESS provide complete data services with a powerful performance at a low cost?
CESS provides complete data services with powerful performance at a low cost. CESS achieves this goal from its pricing mechanism, data preprocessing, and technologies like storage virtualization. It has a flexible storage pricing mechanism that shows real-time pricing based on the market storage demand, supply, and current price, so that the storage supply and demand can be dynamically balanced. It guarantees reasonable storage prices, yet remains profitable for miners at all times.
The pricing is probably like this:
• Every block epoch, a base price will be obtained through CESS oracle from the current market price (such as the latest price of FIL)
• This base price will be proposed by a randomly selected on-duty consensus node and be broadcasted through the network for the consensus.
• This price will be final for the defined time period (often one block epoch), if there is consensus. Otherwise use the previous base price in the previous block epoch till the new price exists.
Data preprocessing contributes more than data security; data slicing allows small data segments to be distributed on multiple nodes, significantly lowering miners’ hardware requirements when incorporating storage virtualization and pooling technologies. With low hardware investments, users pay less for miners to be profitable, which encourages more miners to join, expanding and leading to a more decentralized storage network.
11、How does CESS handle high-throughput data processing for large-scale commercial applications?
Fast data retrieval is fundamental to getting CESS ready to handle high-volume data processing and transactions towards commercialization.
a) CESS assigns two additional miner types: cache miner and retrieval miner, responsible for fast indexing, discovering, and returning data promptly and securely. Each miner type performs duties and is incentivized individually to prevent manipulation by giant nodes, promoting a healthy network.
b) During data preprocessing, data is sliced into small data segments at equal length, facilitating better organization and fast data retrieval.
c) CESS’s novel consensus mechanism guarantees quality miners are always on duty, eliminating any potential poor performance and achieving rapid transaction processing of 10 thousand TPS on a single chain.
12、How to be a part of the CESS ecosystem?
In order to promote network growth, in addition to the incentive system at the technical level, CESS introduces a main node incentive mechanism. Miners who meet the incentive level will be issued CESS tokens.
Storage mining:
Miners with storage capacity join either the storage network or content delivery network to earn tokens proportional to their bandwidth and storage capacity.
Consensus mining:
Miners/nodes with qualified computational resources can deposit collaterals in form of CESS tokens to become candidate consensus nodes. If selected by CESS random consensus mechanism as 11 on-duty nodes, these nodes can earn rewards.
Community contribution:
To further promote the CESS network, developers, community members and partners can submit their proposals and receive community votes. When a quorum is established, corresponding rewards will be issued from the blockchain system.
Token governance will adopt the Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) to achieve on-chain governance capability. CESS community transparently operates the Community Development Fund (CDF) through the votes.

What are the ways for your project to generate revenue in the long run?
CESS offers the storage service for a fee and it is how CESS plans to generate revenue as the base business model. CESS will charge a reasonable price based on the storage space and the time period with a dynamic pricing strategy, briefly described as below.

Partnership with Polkadot Ecosystem
CESS has a capable engineering team with rich experience in core technology fields such as cloud storage, Substrate, blockchain, and application development.
Joined W3F grant program in Wave 11 in October. M1 and M2 delivered, and M3 submitted. The quick delivery demonstrates CESS’s code quality and ability to provide complex and extensive protocol.
Won 1st place in the 2021 Polkadot Global Hackathon on the most competitive blockchain track (the other track is tool and kit). Total 800 registrations, 60+ project submissions and 17 projects in the final demo in this Hackathon.

Ecosystem development
CESS native NFT platform Won an exclusive contract with a Broadway show (will be on stage in 2023) for their NFT business, including NFT minting, trading, show tickets sale, director’s cut of the show, show documentary movie, show highlight clips, fan club gifts, and etc. This NFT application will be launched on CESS network through our smart contract platform (hence being CESS’s native app and a part of CESS ecosystem) and of course use CESS’s decentralized storage technology via APIs (hence being CESS’s paying client for using the functions).
• Working on the partnership with a reputable Hollywood executive artist (a lead of the visual effect studio for Marvel movies). CESS is actively engaging with his big IPs for the major launch of his NFT show in June 2022. Please note he is already designing the NFT arts for a dozen celebrities, artists, designers, and singers.

High Data Security
Upon the receiving the file storage request, CESS will duplicate the file with multiple copies (3 by default and more with fee) and prepare and encrypt the data in a way that data can be securely saved on random nodes. So the chance of data loss because of node quitting the network is significantly lowered and the data breach is technically impossible.
Full Functionality to Maximize the Commercialization
CESS offers a full set of APIs for price inquiry, data retrieval, on-chain exploring, payment function and many other essential functions that a commercial application will commonly use but unfortunately not available in current decentralize storage protocols. CESS will also offer build-in smart contract (both WASM and EVM compatible) to applications launched and developed on CESS natively for the best support and functionalities.
Full IPFS Compatibility
CESS also offer full IPFS compatibility so the applications currently using IPFS can be easily migrated to CESS with minimum cost. For the files already stored on IPFS protocol, they are still available to calling applications via CESS interface to explore, query and search.
