I ALMOST MISSED A GREAT OPPORTUNITY BECAUSE OF MY COINBASE NAME

For the longest time, I thought I already had a Base name. I would log into my Wallet, see my name displayed at the top, and just assume, “Hey, that’s my Coinbase name.” But, as it turned out, I was way far off!

How I Discovered the Truth

A few weeks ago, I saw a great opportunity to apply for the Base Around The World Buildathon, A global meeting of builders around the world, starting with a series of regions in Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, with the ambition to build a global onchain economy. So, I decided to apply.

During registration, I noticed that having a Coinbase name was actually a requirement. Thinking I already had one, I continued with the process, until I hit a roadblock. I realised that the name displayed at the top of my wallet wasn’t my Coinbase name but just a random name to identify your wallet (almost every wallet has this feature during wallet creation). I panicked!

I researched further and found out that it wasn't that difficult to create a Base name, so I decided to get one for myself. Unfortunately for me, I couldn't register through my regular browser. But I found the solution

Getting My Coinbase Name Set Up

Since I couldn’t register through my regular browser, I:

  • Copied the Link and opened it in my Coinbase Wallet’s built-in browser (you could use MetaMask too if needed).

  • From there, I was able to choose a base name that wasn’t taken and was finally able to proceed with the registration.

It was that simple! But here’s the best part – longer names are cheaper, and it only cost me less than $1 to complete the transaction. So if you want a unique name, you don’t need much.

Quick Tips If You’re New to Coinbase Names

  1. Choose Wisely– A unique name is fun, but if you go for a longer one, it’s usually cheaper.

  2. Transaction Cost– You only need a small amount, usually less than a dollar, to register your name.

  3. Browser Tip– Use the Coinbase Wallet browser or MetaMask if you’re having issues with your regular browser.

Now that I have finally set mine up, I feel like I’m part of the Coinbase ecosystem in a whole new way. An opportunity I would have missed.

So, if you would like to get your own Base name, why not give it a shot?
