Let's come to the Otherside: Everything you need to know

Otherside, the next project from the Yuga Labs

Otherside is a metaverse project that allows everyone to create, explore and interact in the way they want. Coming in the form of an MMORPG, players can interact and compete with people around the world.

Otherside is created by Yuga Labs, the team behind famous NFT collections such as Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), MAYC,... and owns the intellectual property (IP) rights of many other top NFT collections. With abundant financial resources, influence, and the Midas touch of Yuga Labs, Otherside has attracted a lot of attention from the community.

Out of the 15 NFT collections with the highest trading volume to date, 8 were either created or acquired by Yuga Labs

What's in the Otherside?

Otherdeed | The key to Otherside

Otherside metaverse is created by 100,000 pieces of land called Otherdeed. Otherdeed is a dynamic NFT, which changes to it will be updated in the NFT during gameplay. Those who own Otherdeed are called Voyagers.

Otherdeed is divided into 5 types, with decreasing supply in the following order:

  1. Infinite Expanse

  2. Cosmic Dream

  3. Rainbow Atmos

  4. Chemical Goo

  5. Biogenic Swamp

Each type represents a place in Otherside. The rarer the land, the closer it is to the center and vice versa.

Out of a total of 100,000 Otherdeed NFTs:

  • 10,000 Biogenic Swamp NFTs were airdropped to NFT BAYC holders.

  • 20,000 Chemical Goo NFTs were airdropped to MAYC holders.

  • The remaining 25,000 are Infinite Expanse NFTs, 23,000 Cosmic Dream NFTs, and 22,000 Rainbow Atmos NFTs. Of these, 15,000 NFTs are allocated to the Yuga team and developers, and 55,000 NFTs are sold to the public.

Yuga Labs has raised over $300 million from the sale of Otherdeed land, while only spending $4.6 million on development.

Each piece of land will have information displayed inside, including the land's name, environmental level, and other things that will be analyzed in the next section, such as Koda, resources, and artifacts.

The Voyager's Journey | The story of Otherside

The first roadmap of Otherside is divided into 11 puzzles, each corresponding to a major stage in the story called The Voyager's Journey. Analyzing and connecting these puzzles will give us a comprehensive view of what Otherside can bring, the current progress, and opportunities in Otherside

The 11 puzzles of The Voyager's Journey
The 11 puzzles of The Voyager's Journey

The 1st Puzzle: First Trip | Game's Beta
First Trip is the beta version of Otherside, where participants can experience the metaverse and have the opportunity to receive valuable rewards. Two events have been held, both have maximum registrations. The first event had 4,500 players simultaneously playing, including Voyagers and selected developers. The second event had 7,200 players simultaneously playing, including Voyagers, developers, and those invited by Voyagers (each Voyager had one invite).

From video reviews and community feedback, although the game still has some lag or frame drops, most agree that the experience Otherside provides is amazing for a beta version. Especially when the game needs to load thousands of players simultaneously and is played directly on the web browser without the need to download.

Video of the 2nd round:

2,220 players from the winning team of the 2nd round were airdropped NFT Winged Helmet, an item in the Otherside Relics collection. Otherside Relics is a collection of symbolic NFTs of special moments in The Voyager's Journey.

The total supply of Winged Helmets is 2,220 NFT, and the floor price is currently 0.309 ETH.
The total supply of Winged Helmets is 2,220 NFT, and the floor price is currently 0.309 ETH.

These items have different uses, for example, the Winged Helmet is an item that equips the Voyager character when the game is released in the future. In the latest KodaPendant collection, Otherside has collaborated with Gucci to launch 3,333 NFTs that allow players to upgrade the character's image in the game and receive a real-life silver necklace. To buy KodaPendant, users must own Koda or Vessel NFT (will be analyzed in later parts) and spend 450 $APE.

Otherside has revealed that there will be a third experience event in the future and it is likely to continue to expand the number of participants. This is a great opportunity for those who want to experience Otherside as well as have the chane to receive rewards.

The 2nd Puzzle: The Codex | Otherside's Whitepaper
Otherside has not disclosed much information related to the second puzzle piece, but from the details shared:

The Codex is a detailed document written by Yuga after receiving contributions from the community. The new document will be a more detailed document providing all the information about Otherside and replacing the current litepaper.

The 3rd Puzzle: Koda Origins / The Decoupling | Creatures of Otherside

This begins when Otherside organizes the Legend of the Mara (LOTM) event. At the start, Otherdeed can be decoupled into new NFTs, including:

  • Otherdeed Expanded: the name of the Otherdeed after decoupling

  • Koda: if an Otherdeed owner has a Koda ID, they will receive a Koda character. 10,000 out of a total of 100,000 NFTs will have Koda NFTs.

  • Vessel: this can be seen as an egg, after the hatching process players will own a Mara

Mara is a creature born from Vessel, it helps operate many activities in Otherside. There are 3 types of Mara corresponding to the 3 types of randomly distributed Vessels to Voyagers, including:

  • Farmer: collecting resources from Otherdeed

  • Hunter: protecting players' Otherdeeds from external attacks

  • Enchanter: increasing stats and rewards

During the resource collection process, players can feed Mara with resources. When Mara has enough resources, it will evolve into Kodamara with higher stats. The increase in stats depends on the quality of the resources that Mara eats. What Mara eats will also affect the appearance of Kodamara later on. The playtime also affects Mara's evolution process through the Celestial Zodiac season system, where each season will give Mara unique characteristics.

Koda is the first primitive species to exist in Otherside. They have all 3 abilities of Mara and have much higher stats than Mara or Kodamara. Players can perform any of the three actions with Koda (but only one action at a time).

All NFTs, such as Vessel, Mara, Kodamara, and Koda, are Dynamic NFTs, and their changes will be updated during the exploration of Otherside. Currently, the game mechanism has not been announced in detail, and there will be many trial versions to enhance stability and balance in the game.

The 4th Puzzle: The Growth | Resources in Otherside

There are four types of resources in Otherside, including:

  • Anima

  • Ore

  • Shard

  • Root

Players can mine the resources that their land possesses. There are three levels of rarity for resources, but there is no detailed information about their impact in the game yet. Mining will not be entirely smooth as there will be creatures that come to disrupt this process. This is expected to be the PVE version of the game.

The environmental level will affect the size of the player's land in the game. The number of levels corresponds to the maximum number of Mara or Koda that land can contain.

In addition to Otherdeed resources, there are artifacts, but their current function has not yet been revealed. They are evaluated as having a great effect in the Otherside storyline. There are more than 21,000 artifacts scattered throughout Otherdeed.

The 5th Puzzle: The Agora | Marketplace in Otherside

After a stable period of operation, players can buy, sell, and trade resources and items. This means that Otherside will launch an NFT marketplace directly in the game.

Players can also craft items from raw materials. This is a prominent feature of Otherside that helps increase player contribution (UGC). The mechanism is quite similar to The Sandbox's item creation mechanism, where players can create any item with their imagination. The difference is that instead of using tokens directly to create items, the design will be saved as a design plan, and to produce them, they require resources mined in Otherside.

The project is developing a system to evaluate designs. The more complex the design, the more resources it will require to produce. In addition to creating useful tools and structures for activities in the game, buying and selling materials or design plans will also contribute significantly to Otherside's activities.

The 6th Puzzle: The Dream | Mission in Otherside
This could be a mission machine located in the center of the Biogenic Swamp area. Players will have a certain number of plays and can earn rewards for participating.

The 7th Puzzle: The Choice | Expanding the Metaverse
Otherside has announced that they will launch 100,000 new NFT lands in the future, bringing the total number of virtual lands in the metaverse to 200,000. This event is quite fitting with the description of the 7th puzzle: The Choice. Thus, the outer areas of Otherside will gradually be explored and Voyagers can choose to settle in one of two locations.

There is not much information about these 100,000 new NFTs and how they will be distributed. However, based on the airdrop history of projects in the Yuga Labs ecosystem, it is likely that NFT holders and those who actively participate in Otherside will be rewarded.

The 8th Puzzle: The Settling | Otherside Development
This is the development phase of Otherside, where players will use the tools provided from previous stages to build their own lands. These lands can have many high-quality structures that can attract many people. This can attract the attention of brands that want to promote their image. Otherdeed can also be a place to organize many online events in the future.

The 9th Puzzle: The Toolkit | New Interoperable Tools
Interoperability is one of the factors that Otherside pays attention to. When the game is officially launched, the community owning PFP NFTs in the Yuga Labs ecosystem or other collections can bring their characters into Otherside

The project is developing a standard for in-game items called OOS (Open Object Standards). This standard allows items to be used anywhere in Otherside or other metaverses that apply the OOS standard. If successful, this will be a significant step toward a future of interconnected metaverse.

The 10th Puzzle: The Aeronauts | New Discoveries
There is not much information about Piece 10: The Aeronauts, but this phase promises to have many things to discover for Voyagers.

The 11th Puzzle: The Rift | The End and the Beginning
This is the end phase of The Voyager's Journey. Voyagers can now choose the parameters and skills for their character and continue their journey in Otherside. Will the end of The Voyager's Journey be the beginning of a new journey?

The highlights of Otherside

Community Advantage
From the beginning, Otherside has had a large potential player base. Yuga Labs owns leading PFP NFT collections with a strong community and abundant financial resources. The airdrop of Otherdeed to BAYC, MAYC holders, and allowing PFP NFT owners in the Yuga ecosystem to bring their characters into Otherside will help the game reach a large number of users.

In addition to the community within its ecosystem, Yuga Labs is also gradually expanding its external community. Those who do not own NFTs can also experience Otherside and have the opportunity to receive valuable rewards such as Winged Helmets. There will be many more events deployed in The Voyager's Journey to attract more participants.

Game quality
Otherside is a top-quality game in the market. The collaboration with the technology company Improbable has yielded promising initial results. Otherside can handle thousands of players participating simultaneously in the same location.

Unique game mechanics
Currently, although there are no detailed documents on the game mechanics, looking at the available components, we can see a big picture with a lot of potential for Otherside. Some unique game mechanics can be mentioned such as:

1/ The key components in the game such as Otherdeed, Mara, Koda,... are all NFTs. They can be freely bought and sold and exchanged. This means that the number of participants is not limited to just 100,000 Otherdeed. Some people may only own Otherdeed, some may only own Mara, some may own both,... This will give players many ways to approach Otherside.

2/ All 3 species of Mara and their functions are equally important: resource creation, harvest acceleration, and land protection, meaning that an Otherdeed owner who wants to develop well must own many Mara. Currently, each Otherdeed is only airdropped one Mara

There may be a scarcity of Mara when the game launches or there may be another Mara airdrop or a mechanism to create new Mara in the game.

3/ Players can create anything they want and can manufacture them if they have enough resources. This mechanism is similar to The Sandbox or Minecraft but more unique. Instead of creating items themselves or using money to create items, the need for resources will increase the realism of the metaverse. This will be an opportunity for new service industries such as item design, resource trading, item trading, etc.

Otherside is a very deep game and there are still many aspects to explore.

The economy in Otherside

The essential components in Otherside include:

  • APE token: The currency used to operate all economic activities in Otherside.

  • Otherdeed: The land in Otherside that contains resources necessary to upgrade Mara/Koda and craft items or structures.

  • Mara/Koda: The crucial elements needed to mine and protect the resources of Otherdeed.

To ensure a smooth economy, there must be a genuine demand for assets such as Otherdeed and Mara/Koda to create resources. Otherside needs to balance the stats of Mara/Koda and develop a metaverse that truly attracts players to spend time developing their land.

The APE token is the currency in Otherside and can be used to purchase in-game assets. Players also need APE to pay for various in-game costs, so the APE token will gain significant value through Otherside.

Things to note if you want to participate in Otherside

In order for the economy to run smoothly, it is likely that Otherside will have to run on its own chain. From the example of Axie Infinity, we can see that the Ronin chain played a significant role in the success of the game. Most of the assets in Otherside are NFTs, and the ability for users to purchase them with tokens such as ETH will affect the attractiveness of APE's value and decrease the motivation for the economy to develop within Otherside. Not to mention, the network must have the necessary performance to meet the ambitions of Otherside.

Currently, the network expected to be used for Otherside is Ape Chain, which has very little information available. Otherside is also still in the early stages, with the game still in phase one of its roadmap.

Price is a major issue as the current cost to participate in Otherside is too high. The lowest price for an Otherdeed after splitting is 0.64 ETH, and the lowest price for a Vessel, the egg to hatch Mara, is 0.29 ETH.

Otherside is very deep game and has a lot of potential with a strong community, promising technology, and many breakthrough mechanisms. However, with many factors that need to be developed, it will take a long time for NFT assets within the game to be applied and even longer for this metaverse to attract significant value.
