Introducing Gwyneth: Taiko’s Booster Rollup Initiative

In November 2023, Taiko announced a new major milestone in its development: Booster rollups. Today, we’re excited to introduce Gwyneth — a booster rollup initiative.

What is Gwyneth?

Let's explore, at a high level, what booster rollups are and what sets Gwyneth apart.

Based

Gwyneth is based. Transactions are sequenced by Ethereum L1 validators, while blocks can be constructed by compatible L1 builders. Gwyneth inherits Ethereum’s security, decentralization, and liveness.

Boosted

Gwyneth is synchronously composable. We call it a “booster rollupwhen composing with and extending the L1. Booster rollups leverage native sequencing, enabling seamless access to rollups and L1 state, leading to a based singularity.

As block space demand increases, more booster rollups can be deployed without further configuration. This process is analogous to upgrading your laptop with additional CPUs or SSDs, which increases computation throughput and enables applications to expand in scope. Gwyneth envisions an Ethereum with no fragmentation.

Preconfirmed

Gwyneth is preconfirmed. By enabling L1 validators to commit to L2 states with preconfirmations, we allow for a great user experience with fast transaction confirmations, while fairly distributing congestion and contention fees amongst all participants in the base layer.

As the world’s first based preconfirmed transaction occurred on Taiko's testnet, we are committed to carrying the spirit forward. 💪

Multi-proved

Gwyneth is born finalized. Secured by Taiko’s in-house multi-prover Raiko, Gwyneth is designed with real-time proving as a premise of synchronous composability.

Currently, we utilize TEE as a minimal guardian of execution, and in the future, Gwyneth will benefit from optimized zkVMs including SP1, Risc0, and potentially many others.

Why “Gwyneth”?

In Welsh, "gwyn" means "pure". To our team, Gwyneth manifests what’s great about Ethereum in the rollup-centric roadmap setting. Harnessing the EVM, validated by L1 validators, seamlessly composing with many other rollups in real-time, Gwyneth embodies what we've long aspired to create.

Given recent advancements in Ethereum research, we're excited to see this vision on the brink of becoming true.

Acknowledgments

Finally, we would like to acknowledge a few partners/firms who have developed open-source code that Gwyneth depends on. These are:

  • Paradigm.

  • RISC Zero.

  • Succinct Labs.

  • Nethermind.

  • LimeChain.

  • Chainbound.

  • powdr labs.

  • Automata Network.

Thank you for your invaluable work!

Summary

Gwyneth is a synchronously composable rollup that leverages based sequencing to improve UX in confirmation and resolve the fragmentation of L2. As we develop Gwyneth, we plan to produce research content on based rollups, preconfirmations, multi-provers, horizontal scaling, and other critical topics. Stay tuned for updates!
