The primary function of a physical album has been replaced by the way our world has evolved toward digitalization. Digitalization has killed some businesses but helped improve many others.
Music industry revenues were negatively impacted by digitization, as revenues slowly dropped from $23,5B in 2001 to an all-time low of $14B in 2014. In comparison, others art forms like cinema & video games have significantly increased their revenues.
Today, 65% of the industry revenues are generated by streaming only.
An engaged music listener buys physical albums, merch, and concert tickets to support their favorite artist.
By allowing music consumers to discover & stream any artist so easily, streaming is responsible for a decrease in the number of engaged music listeners (fans). People tend to be passive music listeners with free plans or streaming subscriptions only.
